Annual monitoring report of the association points to a drop in the number of ads removed, the result of an intellectual property protection program

ABES - Brazilian Association of Software Companies removed from the web, in 2021, 112,429 advertisements, links and websites with content that gave access to files that violate the Copyright and Intellectual Property of the entity's associates. The action has been taking place since 2005 and is carried out through the association's Internet Monitoring work. As a result, ABES has already managed to take down more than 887,000 illegal content since monitoring began.

The balance sheet shows that the number of removed ads dropped compared to 2020, while the number of removed links practically doubled. “We have observed this dynamic because auction sites have become more controlled environments regarding illegal practices, which is why online software piracy has migrated to less controlled environments, in this case, links made illegally available. The average number of sites removed remained with a small increase” explains Carolina Marzano, committee advisor at ABES.

The drop in the number of ads is related to Mercado Livre's Intellectual Property Protection Program (PPPI), founded with the help of ABES almost 20 years ago. “The efficiency of this program is very important for the work of ABES, which is to ensure our associates a business environment conducive to innovation, dynamic, globally competitive, and above all ethical. Totally aligned with the entity's purpose, to contribute to the construction of a digital and less unequal Brazil”, comments Rodolfo Fücher, president of the association.

Until December 2021, ABES counted 112,429 links removed for violating intellectual property rights. 1,647 advertisements promoting pirated products were taken down. In addition, the entity was responsible for taking down 117 websites that offered illegal software downloads.

The association continuously monitors the internet and directly notifies the e-commerce portals and access providers directly. This action aims to protect consumers, who may be exposed to viruses, malware and data hijacking. It also protects consumers who may be violating Brazilian intellectual property laws without knowing it. Companies associated with ABES can count on this monitoring service free of charge by forwarding any illegal content to the Internet Monitoring Sector.

In addition to the PPPI, within the objectives of ABES, the entity also promotes ethical integrity among its associates through the An Ethics Company program, which encourages and offers associates free of charge the means to implement the three essential pillars of an integrity and compliance policy legal framework: the elaboration and implementation of a code of ethics; compliance training for employees and the adoption of an independent whistleblower channel.
