ICANN hosted the ICANN79 Community Forum, its 79th public meeting, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, March 2-7, 2024. This six-day meeting aimed to bring together participants from around the world to promote collaboration to to ensure a stable, secure and unified global Internet. Paulo Milliet Roque and Vanda Scartezini represented ABES at this event.

“ICANN is a global organization, a kind of “UN” of the Internet, responsible for building a secure, interoperable internet worldwide. The following are part of ICANN: companies, governments, users, NGOs, domain owners and resellers, among other member profiles. We are talking about very diverse representatives, from all continents, with often conflicting interests and the work is the search for consensus”, highlighted Paulo.

“The stability, security and resilience of the Internet's unique identifier systems are a direct reflection of the hard work and dedication of the ICANN multistakeholder community,” said ICANN Board Chair Tripti Sinha. “The Internet is a resource that should be available to everyone, so we need to continue working together to ensure that it is reliable and accessible to users around the world”, added the director.

Many sessions and workshops were held during the Community Forum, from topics such as Universal Acceptance and Abuse of the Domain Name System to informative workshops for newcomers and fellows (fellows) from ICANN. The event also included meaningful dialogue with the multi-stakeholder community about ICANN's strategic planning process for fiscal years 2026-2030 to ensure future priorities are aligned with the needs of the global community.

“The technical functions of the Internet are governed by a global community that works collaboratively to resolve technical and policy difficulties for the public benefit. With this unique, democratic, multi-stakeholder approach, every stakeholder has a voice in a bottom-up consensus process,” said Sally Costerton, Interim President and CEO of ICANN.

With more than 20 years of experience with ICANN, Vanda Scartezini is engaged in several community groups and, in ICANN79, she led the session “DNS Women: Involving the Community”, which encourages women's participation in the world of Internet management. A group that started in 2009 and currently has the participation of 375 women from 69 countries.
