VMware, a global leader in virtualization, cloud infrastructure and enterprise mobility, has just joined the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC), an open, non-profit international consortium that is shaping architectural frameworks and the direction of the Internet of Things for industry ( IIoT). The company will participate in the IIC as a voting member through the steering committee and as a member of the association currently held by Dell and Dell EMC.

Together, VMware, Dell and Dell EMC commit to fulfilling the three-year mandate on the committee, alongside IBM, SAP, General Electric, Fujitsu, Intel, The MITER Corporation, RTI and Schneider Electric, to harmonize standards and innovations in the Internet of Things (IoT) space. As members of the steering committee, VMware, in conjunction with Dell and Dell EMC, will be heavily involved in providing input, guidance and direction to organizations regarding IoT standards and will participate in studies to increase contributions to the IIC and the IIoT, which is expanding rapidly.

“This is yet another step that demonstrates VMware's commitment to the Internet of Things,” said Bask Iyer, Chief Information Officer and General Manager, IoT, VMware. For Andy Rhodes, vice president and general manager of IoT at Dell, “Joining the IIC steering committee is an important step in our work to develop this critical technology, as well as enhancing our commitment to a respected organization that is working to harmonize IIoT standards and architectures”.

While companies are looking to integrate IIoT and service offerings within their organizations, significant changes must be made for IIoT to reach enterprise scale. At the current stage, the secondary side of the company's operations is what drives the IIoT. When pilot projects move to enterprise production, IT involvement will be necessary to ensure security and efficient management.
