17.9 million devices were sold in the country, of which 10.4 million were smartphones in the third quarter of 2013, a growth of 147% compared to the same period last year and 20% compared to the second quarter of 2013. ) recorded a drop of 33% compared to 2012 and 5% compared to the previous quarter. The data are from IDC Brasil.

“In addition to the reduction in the average ticket value for the devices, the large manufacturers that operate in Brazil have already turned almost their entire portfolio to this type of device”, evaluates Leonardo Munin, market analyst at IDC Brasil, who also points out as a factor of growth of new brands launched in the cell phone market, coming from other IT segments, causing an increase in competition and, consequently, a greater offer of models and lower prices. “This situation will allow the new Brazilian class C to enter this market once and for all, which could further boost sales of smart cell phones”, he says.
Models with higher price ranges also showed growth, showing that the market moment is good for everyone. "IDC believes that there are two simultaneous transition movements in the market. Those who have a basic cell phone are migrating to an entry-level smartphone and those who already have a device with data are buying a more robust, more premium smartphone", he explains.

Of the 10.4 million smartphones sold in the third quarter, 90% were Android-powered devices. Also according to the study, the open market (sales in channels other than the operator) represents 52% of the sale of devices, but operators remain the main sales channel for this type of device. The corporate segment accounts for 11% of smart device sales, a growth of 148% over the same period last year.

In the world market, the numbers are also record. In the third quarter of the year, smartphone sales reached around 468 million units, an increase of 39% compared to the same period last year. On a quarterly basis, the growth was 9%. The substantial drop in the price of this type of device and the arrival of new manufacturers in the market, in addition to the numbers achieved by China, which now represents more than a third of the market, were the main factors responsible for the positive balance.

"Looking to the future, we expect another big jump in sales for the fourth quarter and a new record for the global smartphone market, as historically this period shows good results motivated by Christmas sales and launches", says the analyst According to him, the world market should reach close to one billion units sold in 2013.
