With the ABES guide, companies will have instructions on how to comply with the laws on the legal use of software, avoiding fines, penalties, financial losses and exposure to cyber crimes, in addition to avoiding unfair competition.

Like any other valuable resource within a company, software is an asset that needs effective management to avoid wasted investments or even future expenses. To guide IT professionals, CFOs, CIOs and entrepreneurs in this regard, the Brazilian Association of Software Companies (ABES) launched the ABES Software Asset Management Manual, which is available, free of charge, on the entity's website www.abes.org.br and in iTunes (itunes.apple.com)

“Our objective is to alert and help companies to program a procedural methodology that follows the best practices in the market, helping companies to improve processes and make conscious investments”, comments the association's president, Jorge Sukarie.

The document lists four steps to start a software asset management process in the company, divided into: Inventory; Proof of License Ownership; Continuous Compliance Verification; Software Asset Inventory Management. The first step allows you to identify unauthorized software installations and which licenses were not used. The second step is to prove ownership of the purchased licenses. The third step, on the other hand, aims to ensure the use of assets within the company. The fourth and final step seeks to manage, through the data collected, the amount of active software.

“It's more common than entrepreneurs realize for employees to install software without proper licensing. However, what few know is that the person responsible for keeping the technology park legalized is the company's owner. Brazilian law determines that it is up to the entrepreneur to respond to any irregularity within the company, including those committed by employees. Therefore, the best way to avoid losses is to invest in an internal audit and create awareness programs about the risks of piracy”, says Sukarie.

So stay tuned and check out the tips that ABES has prepared for you. Share good practices, share this idea.
