Brazilian delegation present at the ITU meeting in Geneva

Recommendation is the result of joint work between the public, private and academic sectors

The international recommendation of the architectural reference model for IoT application devices (ITU-T Y.4460 - Architectural reference model of devices for IoT applications, in English) was approved at the April meeting of the Study Commission 20 - "Internet of Things , Communities and Smart Cities ", from the standardization sector of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), held in Geneva (Switzerland). The recommendation was proposed and coordinated by Brazil in 2018, as you can follow in this exclusive interview published on our portal.

Anatel, as coordinator of the representation of Brazil in international telecommunications discussions through the Brazilian Communication Commissions (CBC), worked in articulation with the national agents involved in the initiative and in the negotiation with the other members of the ITU-T for the approval of the recommendation.

The document defines a classification of IoT devices (Internet of Things, Internet of Things, IoT), based on processing and connectivity capabilities. Based on the correlation of capacities, reference models are defined with the requirements for the software architectures of each of the device classes.

Werter Padilha, ABES IoT Committee Coordinator, who represented the association and was part of the committee that attended the meeting in 2018, says that “recognition is an endorsement granted by over 190 nations and hundreds of companies, after dialogue and adjustments. I was privileged to follow this journey and to understand more closely the value of obtaining this approval. And we still have two other recommendations under evaluation: the smart farming proposal and our national plan as an international benchmarking ”.
International action

The recommendation was proposed and coordinated by Brazil and is the first fruit in the international area of standardization of collaboration between the Brazilian government (Anatel and MCTIC), the private sector (Instituto Cesar and Eldorado) and academia
(Inatel).
The work started in the discussions of the Chamber of IoT, an initiative coordinated by MCTIC, with the participation of members of the public, private and academic sectors, and has, among its objectives, to foster the IoT ecosystem in Brazil.

The ITU is the UN specialized agency in telecommunications. The institution's standardization sector (ITU-T) now has about 190 countries and more than 700 companies among its members. For a recommendation to be approved, there must be an “agreement” of all members. The document is now for editorial review and will then be available free of charge in the six official ITU languages.
