Associated with ABES, Trimble has recently signed a partnership with 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) – led by the Rockefeller Foundation – to provide a critical resilience building tool for cities in the 100RC network. Using the software Trimble® eCognition® Essentials, cities can leverage readily available satellite and aerial imagery collected by unmanned or manned aerial systems (UAS) to produce accurate land use and mapping information that can be used in conjunction with a Geographic Information System ( GIS). The software allows cities to transform images into actionable, quantifiable information about land use that can be applied to improve a city's resilience building efforts.

Cities that are part of the 100RC network can use Trimble eCognition Essentials to help design and implement their long-term resilience strategies, as well as better plan for and respond to stresses and shocks such as the heat island effect, air quality and stormwater runoff, floods, landslides, fire prevention and recovery and much more. This out-of-the-box solution allows the responsible team to import, merge, interpret and analyze data to gain a greater understanding of their environments while spending the least amount of resources or time in the process, all at the same time.

"In order to increase their resilience, cities need accurate and reliable official data to assess and understand their built and natural environments," said Bryn Fosburgh, vice president at Trimble. "A key part of the process is managing and processing large amounts of data in a timely manner. eCognition Essentials produces the information needed to prioritize planning and response efforts."

"Cities can't just build resilience out of thin air – they need the right tools to do it," said Michael Berkowitz, president of 100 Resilient Cities. "By delivering eCognition Essentials software to our city network, Trimble is transforming the work of planners and analysts by providing an analytical tool that transforms imagery and GIS data into real, actionable information for better decision making." the executive.

Trimble joins a prestigious group of other "Platform Partners" who are committed to helping cities around the world become more resilient to the shocks and stresses that are increasingly important aspects of urban life. Platform partners are an essential component of 100RC's efforts, both in helping to provide cities with the tools they need to build resilience and also in influencing the market as other tools are developed.

100RC is dedicated to helping cities become more resilient to “shocks” – catastrophic events such as hurricanes, fires, earthquakes and floods – and 'stresses' – slow-moving disasters such as water shortages, homelessness and unemployment – which they increasingly face in the 21st century.
