On the report The Paradox of Cyberthreats, recently released by Trend Micro – a multinational specialized in the defense of digital threats and security in the cloud era –, the company outlined the scenario of cyber threats throughout 2017 and what the forecasts for 2018 are.
In a clipping, the company also revealed the most recurrent digital attacks in Brazil and in the world throughout 2017.

The threats that accounted for the highest detection rates were: malicious mobile application downloads, Ransomware attacks and threats and spam via email. The study also revealed cyber-attack rates in Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific.

Below are some standout numbers:

– More than 6 million downloads of malicious applications were registered in Brazil and more than 50 thousand of these downloads contained some type of virus.

– Within the global scenario, 327 new ransomware families were detected in 2017 – an increase of 32% compared to 2016. Brazil presented a rate of 11% of attacks in the global comparison and 50% of attacks in Brazil alone.

– The most viewed adware in activity in Brazil was OpenCandy: Trend Micro detected more than 26 thousand cases during the analyzed period. OpenCandy may install spyware on a victim's computer or slow down the installation of programs.

– Malware detections also reached a significant number: more than 60 million malware attacks were detected by Trend Micro. Clicks on malicious URLs claimed over 4 million victims.

– More than 10,000 PCs were infected with malware aimed at Internet Banking, which can steal sensitive data such as users' bank logins and passwords.

According to Trend Micro, surprisingly, most attacks seen in 2017 had patches available. Therefore, the recommendation is that companies protect themselves from known vulnerabilities, which represents a big step for organizations around the world not to be victims of global attacks such as WannaCry.

Also, according to the material, the trend for 2018 is for cybercriminals to become more sophisticated in their approaches. The trend is for hackers to design more strategic attacks targeting a company's most valuable assets.
