A global survey conducted by Bizagi, a software provider for digital process automation, points out that nine out of 10 companies (87%) face a lot of turmoil during digital transformation processes. In Brazil, this number rises to 96%.

The global survey interviewed more than 1000 IT professionals or responsible for the customer experience, noting an acceleration of this digital transformation trend, where 73% of all respondents and 83% of people interviewed in Brazil believe that not updating should significantly reduce competitiveness. However, factors such as the speed to implement changes and the complexity of corporate processes represent obstacles for most companies that envision this transformation process.

the pace of change

Worldwide, only one in three companies (32%) report digital transformation projects in progress. The United States and Canada lead the trend with 52% of companies implementing new digital projects, followed in Latin America by Brazil (39%), Mexico (27%) and Colombia with just 20%. 75% of respondents believe the pace of change is increasing, a reaction to innovative businesses changing the business landscape, with the vast majority (82%) opining that accelerating the speed of transformation is important to keep up with the evolution of their industry.

The drivers of digital transformation

Transformation presents several risks and benefits. Six out of 10 companies (60%) say operational agility is a critical factor, although more than half (54%) also mentioned the need to respond to evolving customer expectations.

Four out of five respondents (80%) believe it is essential to improve their customers' experience, in addition to knowing their immediate needs and individual situation. The customer is even more important for companies with digital transformation already underway, where 79% cite the evolution of their customers' expectations as a key factor for the transformation.

"Customer expectation is transforming business thinking and driving digital transformation," said Juan Manuel Mogollon, Bizagi Executive Vice President for Latin America. "Most companies are struggling to get around the challenges that come with digital transformation, and the key is knowing the drivers behind this change and creating the agility needed to respond quickly. Companies need to balance their ideas, collaboration and technology to overcome obstacles and create an army of pioneers capable of promoting this change, helping them to reap the fruits of digital transformation", he concludes.

The Agility Trap

The main obstacles for companies seeking a rapid digital transformation are related to corporate culture, organizational complexity, lack of processes that enable participation, employee collaboration and innovation. These challenges are described by Bizagi as the "agility pitfalls", which arise when a company wants rapid digital transformation but finds itself limited by business, organizational or technological complexity.

The biggest risk for any company is the lack of preparation when implementing a digital transformation project; 70% of respondents say that the transformation work suffers from the complexity of its internal processes. In Brazil, 68% of respondents reinforced this statement.

Despite the importance of digital transformation projects, the faster businesses evolve, the greater the obstacles to be faced. Therefore, companies fall into traps such as:

Lack of planning: Many companies fail to map the complexity of their systems and business processes before starting the implementation. Nearly two-thirds (63%) believe they are unaware of the implications of these changes for their business, as the transformation includes engagement services and user experiences.

Resistance to change: More than 51% respondents said that lack of willingness and resistance to change is a major constraint on the digital transformation process in their companies.

Cast systems: Only 28% of respondents believe their customer service systems are agile, 26% report very agile internal systems, and only 21% put their operating systems in the same category.
