The objective is to develop projects and methodologies aimed at Smart Cities

Telefônica Vivo and the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo (EPUSP) signed a technical cooperation agreement with the objective of developing projects and methodologies that can contribute to the solution of urban problems, using digital technologies. The partnership will involve the creation of a laboratory for the implementation and study of pilot projects within the scope of Smart Cities.

The laboratory will be implemented in the first quarter of 2015, using Telefônica Vivo's Smart City platform as its main resource. Initially, the research will focus on the areas of energy and public lighting in municipalities, seeking the intelligent and sustainable management of these resources. Subsequently, other themes of municipal management may be covered. The laboratory will also be a space for the creation of evaluation indicators, a segment that is still in an embryonic stage in the country.

In this way, the laboratory will also fulfill the mission of disseminating projects for smart cities, including the application of its concepts and methodologies on university campuses. "The partnership with Escola Politécnica for technical seals will give enormous weight to the theme of Smart Cities, helping us to deepen knowledge in the area and stimulating even more the innovation processes in the company", says Antonio Carlos Valente, president of Telefônica Vivo .

The Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), which already maintains a double degree agreement with the Polytechnic School of USP, will also collaborate with the agreement. "This type of partnership is very important for the University, as it allows bringing students and researchers closer to the current demands of society, producing works of great added value for the university-society relationship", says prof. Luiz Cláudio Ribeiro Galvão, researcher at the Energy Group of the Department of Energy and Automation Engineering (GEPEA) at EPUSP.

Telefónica actively participates in Smart Cities projects in Spain, such as Santander, which is now considered one of the cities with the most intelligent management resources in the world. In 2010, the company led this project, which involved the participation of 25 organizations from 10 countries.

In Brazil, the municipality of Águas de São Pedro, 186 km from São Paulo, is hosting Telefônica Vivo's Digital City Project. The company is investing approximately R$ 2 million in the transformation of the location, which will serve as a model for the implementation of similar projects in São Paulo and other regions of Brazil. The transformation process is in full swing and goes beyond the modernization of connection and voice services, also encompassing the implementation of 20 different digital solutions in the areas of education, health and public management.

The Polytechnic School, through GEPEA, has been active in several municipalities in the State of São Paulo, such as Diadema, Leme, Guarulhos, Embu, Mauá and the city of São Paulo itself, contributing to the improvement of energy and lighting management public. The competences of both institutions, Telefônica and EPUSP, are now combined to generate new knowledge, with the aim of contributing to the development of Brazilian cities, helping them to overcome their main needs in the field of resource management, infrastructure and services to citizens.
