The IRS is analyzing your social networks! No, it is not a scheme of espionage, invasion of privacy or breach of confidentiality. She is only seeing what you allow everyone to see. The case is that anyone who “flaunts” on the web, and does not declare this in the Income Tax, for example, claiming that he has no equity, can enter the fine mesh and be triggered in several other cases.

Why is that? Simple: Big Data. This technology represents a new digital reality, and it also expands the control that the government has over the “smart guys” who declare their patrimony to everyone on social networks and, when settling the accounts with the government, they give a misunderstanding.

Big Data is nothing more than a process of joining a very high volume of data, processed by an algorithm that tries to find a pattern and define better results for what is sought. For now, the government still does not use the full potential of this tool, but in several states this is already a reality.

The state of Pernambuco, for example, has for some time started using a tax collection forecasting tool, based on data collected from the state's residents' network. This allowed them to calculate revenue targets for the following year, to predict GDP growth and decline. Information with several practical uses for government management.

The next step taken by the government is to take advantage of the data that the internet can offer, focusing mainly on social networks and preparing analysts and auditors to work with a good amount of data from a selection of people liable to tax investigation, for tax evasion.

The auditors, after receiving the preliminary data, analyze whether the income that the person declared can actually pay for that luxurious life, travel, luxury cars, real estate that the person displays on social networks. If that doesn't match, they begin to investigate where that money comes from.

The Revenue is taking advantage of one of the most basic instincts of the human being, that of showing off. Technology is collaborating for this, analyzing quantities of information that a group of people could not analyze alone, and only then does human analysis enter. The amount of information they work with has always been high, but technology is, in short, serving to better control that information. Big data is part of a revolution.

So, know that it is important to consider keeping your organization inside and outside the online environment. The stakes are high. Keep your accounts up to date and never think about resorting to tax evasion. And if possible, avoid ostentation. It has more cons than pros, as it incurs a risk to your safety and that of your family members, and can get bad at different times in the company. The image counts - a lot.
