Software generates jobs and leads to a more prosperous future also in Brazil

The software industry accounted for US$ 1.14 trillion of US GDP, considering both direct and indirect impacts, in 2016. The number is 6.4% higher than that recorded in 2014. Taking into account only direct impacts, the software industry handled US$ 564.4 billion in the same period, 18.7% higher than the previous one. The data is from the study “The Growing $ 1 Trillion Economic Impact of Software”, by Software.Org, an international, independent and non-partisan research organization.

Also in 2016, the sector employed more than 10.5 million people, directly and indirectly, in the United States. Directly, the number reaches 2.9 million jobs, 14.9 % higher than 2014.

“Although the numbers speak of the American economy, they reflect a global trend that we also see in Brazil”, explains BSA's country manager for the country, Antônio Eduardo Mendes da Silva, known as Pitanga. “Software contributes to the economy, generates jobs and leads to a more prosperous future”, he adds.

Globally, Brazilian figures are more modest – according to the Brazilian Software and Services Market 2017 study by the Brazilian Association of Software Companies (ABES), the national Information Technology market represented 39.6 billion dollars last year or 2, 1% of local GDP. However, from a Latin American perspective, Brazil remains in 1st place in the ranking of countries that invest the most in the IT sector: 36.5%, reveals the study, ahead of Mexico (22.9%) and Colombia (10, 2%). In all, the Latin American region handled US$ 105.3 billion in this market.

According to Pitanga, the benefits of software go beyond the IT sector, producing opportunities for the entire economy, especially as the sector invests massively in research and development of new products and technology. In 2013 alone, US software companies invested more than US$ 63 billion, 21% more than in 2012.
