With the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) industries and processes that involve production management, such as the supply chain, are already observing significant changes, especially in terms of productivity. According to Márcia Maciel, business solution architect at Software AG, it has driven a true revolution in the industries, which in the long term will directly impact production cycles and forms.

The Internet of Things provides a high level of data detail that was not possible before. For example, today sensors can be incorporated into all production stages of a factory, which facilitates demand control and process verification. This makes it possible for industries to make all stages tangible, from raw material control to its sale.

A study by Vanson Bourne, a company specializing in market research, points out that nine out of ten companies monitor most of their operational processes. However, only 48% of them can actually interfere in the management and optimize the logistics processes. This means that IoT, in this scenario, is still a differentiator for companies that actually use it as a driving tool for better results.

“The use of the Internet of Things in industries will drive the increase of automation in processes, helping manufacturers to create new flows and, consequently, reduce their costs. In addition, sensors also drive predictive maintenance services, which today not only improve processes between companies and suppliers, but also contribute to service optimization”, says the executive.

Below, Márcia Maciel lists two of the main advantages of using the Internet of Things in supply chain processes in industries:

– Increase in the potential of market competitiveness

Companies increasingly need to define actions that allow them to change prices and define promotions according to market movements. The processes inherent to the Internet of Things enable an improvement in logistics management, and, consequently, allow the company to predict its performance and optimize its production.

“The integrated management of logistics processes should contribute to the improvement of marketing strategies, which will better direct their communication according to market demand”, he reinforces.

– Automation helps manufacturers create new revenue streams at lower costs

Factory automation is on the rise. Many places that have cheap labor have increasingly adopted automation equipment, which in addition to reducing production costs, also improve the health and safety of factory employees. In addition, the benefits brought by the adoption of IoT reduce maintenance costs and downtime in plants, in addition to simplifying their operations.
