Siemens inaugurated its eighth Research and Development center focused on improving cutting-edge technologies. Based in Belo Horizonte (MG), the new center originates from Senergy, a Brazilian startup acquired by Siemens in 2012. The center is already a global competence center for detecting non-technical energy losses and a reference in the export of software and solutions. .

“The new R&D center is part of Siemens' strategy to offer solutions for smart grids in both the Brazilian and global markets”, explains Sergio Jacobsen, General Manager of Services and Solutions for Smart Grids at Siemens in Brazil. “It demonstrates Siemens' commitment to the development of innovative solutions in the domestic market. We have professionals creating technologies capable of contributing to the integration and modernization of systems”.

In Brazil, commercial losses, which correspond to fraud and measurement and billing problems, represented, in 2013, a loss of approximately 6 billion reais to concessionaires, according to data from the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL). According to the entity, the North region is the leader in terms of commercial losses, with an average of 22% of the total energy injected into the system.

Among the main technologies developed in the new R&D center are measurement solutions for the entire transmission chain. One of the highlights of the company's portfolio for this market is the MECE, a measurement data management system capable of organizing, processing and facilitating the visualization of information.

In Brazil, in addition to the competence center dedicated to the detection of energy losses, Siemens has seven other Research, Development and Non-routine Engineering centers in Brazil, employing technicians, engineers, masters and doctors, dedicated to the development and improvement of products and solutions for our customers.

In 2012, the company chose Brazil to install its first unit focused on Smart Grid solutions in Latin America. Located in the Technological Park of the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná (PUC-PR), in Curitiba, the center's activities are focused on software and information technology solutions for the management and automation of energy systems.
