Responsible for most of the main digital transformation processes with APIs in the country, Sensedia presented the main API trends for the coming years to the market. The announcement was made by the company's partners and founders, Kleber Bacili and Marcílio Oliveira, and will serve to guide companies on the path to digital business.

According to Kleber Bacili, CEO of Sensedia, APIs have been undergoing a process of constant evolution. APIs gained relevance from Social Networks, generating open data exposure for information exchange and sharing, later evolving to use in internal integrations and open innovation. For the future, the company points out that APIs will be important to create new interactions with the end user and the predictions are divided into 5 proposals: Post Apps Era, Governance, Data Ownership, Internet of Things (IoT) and Digital Ecosystems.

For the future, the interaction will not only be via the app or Bots, but through another channel still unknown. “We're going to have to think about exposing the API to be consumed by another channel. More important than having a standardized architecture, the essential thing is to be agile enough to be able to adapt to digital experiences that we still don't know”, said Marcílio Oliveira, COO of Sensedia.

When using APIs to expose data, governance was only responsible for internal integration. But the scenario is different and Kleber Bacili warns that large companies are already using APIs to adapt their own architecture. “We need to bring to the world of APIs the concerns that we only had in traditional integrations. API taxonomy and service governance, which were previously on the internal integration agenda, will be part of the API exhibition calendar and will be responsible for a more agile architecture”, says the executive.

BBVA is a world reference in Open Banking and during APIX 2017, Marcela Zetina, Director of Innovation at the bank in Mexico, highlighted in her presentation that there is a European standard, PSD2, which states that data is the property of the user. The norm obliges all banks on the continent to provide programmatic access through APIs to customers. “We hope this trend spreads to other sectors of the economy. Even when not covered by regulation, companies must be aware that the data belongs to the customer and only the customer can allow this information to flow in the chain so that new experiences can be created,” said Bacili.

The consolidation of the Internet of Things involves, in a way, the evolution of communication protocols. Today, many of the devices are connected with wifi, but there are several specific protocols that are maturing to allow connectivity within small spaces and closer proximity. The company's prediction is that we will have an increase in API standards to create integrated experiences across devices.
“You have to be prepared to consume more API than to expose”, that is Kleber's message about digital ecosystems. According to the director, when developing a travel application, instead of creating a new ecosystem, the company should integrate, for example, with TripAdvisor's network of digital partners. For him, the dispute over who will create and who will be able to integrate into ecosystems will be quite intense in the coming years.

The announcement was made during APIX 2017, an event focused on API strategies, held on May 30th. At the end of the meeting, the executives gave some tips so that companies can identify what the true digital demands are and one of the measures is to put APIs on the agenda not only of the Architecture team, but also of the Product team.
