Digital economy, supply chain and cybersecurity are among the topics

Schneider Electric, a leader in the digital transformation in electricity management and automation, launches Go Green in the City 2018 – a global challenge that aims to find innovative ideas and solutions for smart and more energy-efficient cities. In its eighth year, the competition has become a major event for business and engineering students from around the world.

In 2017, around 20,000 young innovators (58% women) participated from 3,000 universities in 180 countries. This year, prizes for Go Green in the City contestants are high, with mentoring, networking, travel, cash prizes, and business and employment opportunities.

Three new themes focusing on digitization

In 2018, the competition is expected to attract even more interest, thanks to a wide range of themes. Students are invited to submit their ideas in one of five categories: Sustainability and Inclusion, "Sustainable Without Borders/Innovative Idea" (in any topic), Digital Economy, Smart Supply Chain or Cybersecurity. These last three are new categories, which bring a greater focus on digitization, as well as a broader approach to innovation.

Olivier Blum, Director of Human Resources at Schneider Electric, comments: “Schneider Electric has an audacious vision to solve our planet's energy paradox. Go Green in the City was conceived as a platform for young innovators to be part of this vision. Helping students develop their ideas for new sustainable solutions and starting a career in our industry is a great way to accelerate positive change."

This enthusiasm is shared by the participants. Raja Jain and Nimisha Gupta of IIT Roorkee in India took first place in 2017 with their "Evacool" air cooling system. "Go Green in the City was a dream come true! Winning the competition brought us a great sense of achievement as well as a rich learning experience. If you care about how technology can promote greener practices and sustainable, this competition is the best opportunity to show that", they say.

a growing success

Teams must consist of two students who attend accredited business or engineering courses and are in the same country for the duration of the competition. Each team must include at least one female member, in accordance with Schneider Electric's policy of promoting diversity and inclusion. The deadline for submitting the application is June 1, 2018.

All selected teams will be mentored by Schneider Electric experts, to produce viable designs, which will be presented in one of seven regional semi-finals in Europe, North America, China, India, Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Africa and South America. Each of the seven regional winners will be invited to prepare for the competition final, along with an outstanding women's team and two "wild-card" teams (additional teams selected by the semi-finalists).

After this second round of mentoring, ten teams will meet in the global final, in the United States (city to be announced), during the fall of the Northern Hemisphere. The winning team, selected by the executive jury, will have the chance to start a career at Schneider Electric, after an international trip to visit two locations of their choice, all over the world, where Schneider Electric plants are present.
