With the objective of anticipating and developing increasingly complete solutions, Roche, a global leader in biotechnology and sponsor of the 100 Open Startups Movement, an international platform that connects startups to large companies, announces the challenge “Transforming the Oncology Journey”, for startups and research and development groups that have innovative approaches to healthcare projects.
 
The winning startup or research group will be announced in November 2017 and will receive the following incentives from Roche:
 
• Subsidy for corporate services: consulting services (building a business model, growth strategy or internal structuring); 
 
• Subsidy for office supplies/reagents or sponsorship to participate in a leading international event or congress.
 
“The 100 Open Startups is an opportunity to encourage innovative projects that are aligned with our role of transforming scientific knowledge into benefits for society, with discoveries and initiatives that respond to medical needs, especially in areas not yet met, and to our commitment to seek alternatives with the public and private sectors so that these innovations are inserted into the health chain, available to those who need them”, comments Rolf Hoenger, president of Roche Farma Brasil.
 
Registration is open and can be done until July 31, through the website www.openstartups.net/Roche.
  
To be eligible, projects must fall into the following categories:
 
Oncological Discoveries – startups and R&D groups that have world-class therapies, as well as new technology platforms with the potential to transform discoveries and generate innovative medicines:
 
• Cancer immunotherapy: therapies that promote immunity against cancer by modulating the function of effector cells of the immune system and the tumor microenvironment;
 
• Targeted molecular therapies: partnerships that provide access to health platforms, technologies and data;
 
• Innovative technologies: partnerships to increase R&D capacity and complement the company's portfolio, particularly related to modalities: small molecules, antibodies, targeted therapies, oligonucleotide-based therapies and drug delivery.
 
Digital Oncology - initiatives to increase the efficiency of healthcare delivery, bringing digital solutions that increase hospital productivity and empower cancer patients to better manage post-hospital care:
 
• Hospital management and operational excellence software;
 
• Patient-centric integrated care management platforms;
 
• Hospital performance reporting tools for patient transparency;
 
• Home medical devices and technologies for remote care;
• Smart wearables for health monitoring.
 
Affordable Oncology – solutions to resolve the unequal distribution of cancer resources and services and improve the qualification and distribution of health professionals and equipment across the country:
 
• Connect more patients to the healthcare system and cancer care services;
 
• Improve cancer detection and diagnosis;
 
• Improve the qualification and distribution of health professionals and equipment.
 
Data from the World Health Organization show that the number of new cases of cancer is expected to grow exponentially in the next two decades around the world. The burden of cancer mortality in Latin America is greater than in Europe or the US and will increase to more than one million deaths per year by 2030. “We have a huge challenge with cancer and this is the opportunity for startups in the area of to connect with us in order to develop, in partnership, innovative projects to fight the disease”, concludes Hoenger.
