Program seeks five prototypes that propose solutions to social problems

Registration for the Red Bull Basement hacker residency is valid until June 3rd. The program seeks to develop projects that use technology to transform society.

After three years of supporting projects that benefit the city, Red Bull Basement expands and is now looking for prototypes with broader themes, looking at needs such as: sanitation, public safety, social inclusion, climate change, water resources and inclusive education. But the program is also open to other areas. The objective is to encourage citizen innovation, with projects that have consistency, feasibility and potential impact on society and its citizens.

A novelty for this edition will be the open call: after selecting the projects, a selection will be opened for other collaborators to enroll and collaborate in the development of the selected prototypes.

After four years, Red Bull Basement, which was born in Brazil, has become a global project and will have activities in more than 22 countries with residences in Spain, South Africa and the United States. Another novelty for this year will be Red Bull Basement University, which will seek solutions for universities.

The residency will take place from July to September at Red Bull Station. Residents will have at their disposal a makerspace with equipment for prototyping the projects, which should be presented at the end of the residency, as well as a parallel agenda with lectures and workshops on various topics and a Technology Festival, which will take place in September. When ready, the developed projects will be part of a shared platform.

To monitor and help in the development of projects, providing support and guidance, residents will have the experience of five mentors from different areas and with extensive experience in innovation. They are: Andrei Speridião (product design), Gabriela Agustini (entrepreneurship), Fernando Velazquez (problem design), Julio Freitas (strategic design) and Wesley Lee (design and hardware). Guest mentors and an in-house monitor will also participate in the process, who will help with everyday practical issues in the maker laboratory.
