McAfee has just made available the report for the third quarter of 2012 on threats, which points out that mobile attacks almost doubled in volume compared to the previous quarter.

“Cybercrime, hacktivism and cyberwarfare are in a continuous state of evolution. Governments and large corporations as well as small businesses and home users face a wide range of digital threats, as cybercriminals gain more information about their victims and take advantage of the latest exploitation tools and attack platforms to launch new malware.” , senior vice president of McAfee Labs.

Check out some of the trends uncovered by nearly 500 McAfee Labs multidisciplinary researchers in 30 countries:

The attack called Operation High Roller, financial fraud identified at the beginning of the year, spread beyond Europe, including the United States and Colombia.

Ransomware (threats that extort money from their victims) increased by over 43%, making it one of the fastest growing areas for online scams. Most of this type of malware accuses the user of visiting illegal websites, locks the computer, and then demands payment to unlock the device.

The “Zoo” malware hit the 100 million attack mark and for mobile devices almost doubled the previous quarter's total, with the Android platform remaining a preferred target.

Web threats increase 20% on suspicious URLs, with a large number of malware hosted at these addresses. Nearly 64% of the newly discovered suspicious URLs are located in North America.
