Acquisition facilitates cloud portability

Red Hat, a world leader in providing open source software solutions, announced the acquisition of assets and technology from Permabit Technology Corporation, a provider of software for data deduplication, compression and optimized provisioning. By adding Permabit's deduplication and data compression capabilities to the world's leading Linux platform – Red Hat Enterprise Linux – Red Hat will be able to facilitate and support enterprise digital transformation through more efficient storage options.

As more companies adopt the functionality offered by digital technologies such as Linux containers and cloud computing, demands increase for new storage resources capable of running these services and storing the resulting data. Storage efficiency is a key part of meeting these needs, particularly with the emergence of hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI), which combines storage and compute on a single x86 server. Enterprise open source software solutions can help address the storage challenges posed by digital transformation technologies. Using these solutions, it is possible to increase the storage capacity available for applications, without necessarily increasing the physical volume.

"Digital transformation technologies, including cloud infrastructure, Linux containers, and hyperconverged infrastructure, require companies to re-examine ignored or previously commoditized technology decisions, especially around storage, to achieve the greatest possible efficiency for business evolution. With the acquisition of Permabit's data compression and deduplication tools for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat will be ready to help these organizations search for the most efficient storage to drive business innovation," said Jim Totton, vice president and manager. Red Hat General.

With Permabit technology, Red Hat will be able to offer powerful deduplication and data compression capabilities alongside Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which will also increase the capacity of the company's storage and hybrid cloud technologies, including Red Hat OpenStack Platform, Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform and Red Hat Storage. Consistent with its commitment to providing fully open source and innovative solutions, Red Hat plans to make Permabit code available. This will allow customers to use a single, fully supported and open platform to improve storage efficiency without having to rely on heterogeneous tools or custom and poorly supported operating systems.
