The Connected Smart Cities 2020 Ranking, the most important study on cities, highlighted São Paulo as the most intelligent and connected in Brazil. Financial center of the country, the capital of São Paulo also won 1st place in the categories: Southeast Region; Cities with more than 500 thousand inhabitants; Technology and inovation; and Mobility and Accessibility

On the 8th, 9th and 10th of September, the national Connected Smart Cities and Mobility Digital Xperience 2020 event will take place, Brazil's most important city and mobility initiative and which, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will be presented in the virtual and through a dedicated platform.

During the Opening Ceremony of the event, which took place this Tuesday (08/09) and was attended by authorities, representatives of companies and national and international experts, it was disclosed  the result of the Connected Smart Cities 2020 Ranking. The study, prepared by Urban Systems, in partnership with Necta, is in its 6th edition and maps all 673 municipalities with more than 50 thousand inhabitants, with the objective of defining the cities with the greatest potential for development in Brazil.

The highlight in the General Ranking 2020 was for the city of São Paulo, which reached the first position. The second place went to Florianópolis (SC), followed by Curitiba (PR), Campinas (SP) and Vitória (ES). In sixth place is São Caetano do Sul (SP); followed by Santos (SP); Brasilia DF); Porto Alegre (RS); and Belo Horizonte (MG).

In addition to the title of the most intelligent and connected city in Brazil, the capital of São Paulo also won first place in the categoriess: Southeast Region; Cities with more than 500 thousand inhabitants; Technology and inovation; and Mobility and Accessibility. São Paulo came in second place in the Urbanism and Entrepreneurship Categories; 5th in Economics and 12th place in Governance.

As of the 2019 edition, the Ranking incorporated concepts and new indicators based on ISO 37122 -Sustainable Cities And Communities - Indicators For Smart Cities, remaining as the best reference for comparison and analysis of smart cities in Brazil. The result is presented on 4 fronts: general, by thematic axis, by region and by population range. The study is composed of indicators from 11 main sectors: mobility, urbanism, environment, technology and innovation, economy, education, health, security, entrepreneurship, governance and energy, the same thematic axes of the national Connected Smart Cities event.

“In these six years of operation, the Connected Smart Cities Platform has played a fundamental role with companies, entities and governments in the search for innovation, with the fundamental objective of making Brazilian cities smarter and more connected, especially in the current pandemic moment of Covid- 19 ”, comments Necta's CEO and creator of Connected Smart Cities and Mobility, Paula Faria.

HIGHLIGHTS SÃO PAULO

The mayor of São Paulo, Bruno Covas (PSDB), mentions that the highlights of the city in the Connected Smart Cities 2020 Ranking reflect the investments made in technology in recent years.

“We believe that it is important that the city is increasingly a smart city for reasons such as: the generation of jobs and income that, through technology, provide the same opportunities to young people from the periphery, reducing social inequality in the city of São Paulo ”. The mayor also referred to the importance of technology for the development of other areas in the city of São Paulo. “Having bet on the development of technology, either through actions carried out directly by the Secretariat of Innovation and Technology, or by several actions carried out in the areas of education, health, licensing, housing and mobility, was important and I am very happy with the recognition ( …). And it is worth investing in a smarter city so that we can improve the quality of life for the population, ”he said.

The municipal secretary of Innovation and Technology, Juan Quirós, comments that the city of São Paulo concentrates a large number of companies and organizations with technology-based products, which makes the capital's ecosystem a reference when it comes to innovation. “The municipality also stands out with regard to the availability of qualified labor, with a wide range of universities in the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) sector. And these elements are fundamental for the construction of a structure that responds quickly to social and economic demands, and the digital transformations of today, ”concludes Quirós.

SÃO PAULO IN NUMBERS

The financial center of the country, with the highest GDP, and one of the most populous cities in the world, the capital of São Paulo reached the first position in the Connected Smart Cities Ranking, after two years in the second position of the Ranking (editions 2018 and 2019). The city of São Paulo has 3 technology parks and 11 incubators and a percentage of 4.1% of formal jobs in the technology and innovation sector and 4.6% in the education and research and development sector, even with the great economic diversity of the city . São Paulo also showed an increase of 1,79% of GDP per capita, with 84.7% of jobs in the city being in the private sector. The city also has 0.63 formal jobs per inhabitant in the Economically Active Population (PEA); 71.0% of municipal revenue does not come from transfers and the average income of formal workers is R$ 3,935. The capital of São Paulo also includes 85 internet access points per 100 inhabitants and 56.3% of broadband connections with speeds greater than 34 mb (the last survey pointed to less than 50%). In 2019, the municipality received in CNPQ scholarship the equivalent of R$ 14,401 per 100 thousand inhabitants and almost 1/3 of formal jobs are held by professionals with higher education.

HIGHLIGHTS OF RANKING CONNECTED SMART CITIES 2020

The Southeast region concentrates the most intelligent and connected cities, with six municipalities among the 10 best placed (in 2019 there were six and in 2018, seven). Three municipalities are in the South and one in the Midwest, with the North and Northeast regions not having a representative in the top 10. Palmas (TO) is in 32nd place in the General Ranking and Recife (PE) in 15th. In the classification by region, the following stand out: in the Midwest, Brasília (DF) with the 1st place in the Connected Smart Cities Ranking; in the Northeast, Recife (PE); in the North, Palmas (TO); in the Southeast: São Paulo (SP); and in the South: Florianópolis (PR). Jaguariúna (SP) is the highlight of cities between 50 and 100 thousand inhabitants; from 100 to 500 thousand: Vitória (ES); and over 500 thousand inhabitants: São Paulo (SP).

For the President of Urban Systems and partner of the Connected Smart Cities Platform, Thomaz Assumpção, the Connected Smart Cities Ranking year after year has been helping cities to understand their level of smart and sustainable development, offering parameters so that cities can plan and create strategies to become more human and provide quality of life to their inhabitants .

The first place in urbanism went to Curitiba; Mobility and Accessibilitye: São Paulo (SP); Environment: Santos (SP); Entrepreneurship: Rio de Janeiro - RJ); Economy: Barueri (SP); Technology and inovation: Sao Paulo-SP); Health: Vitória (ES); education: São Caetano do Sul (SP); Safety: Ipojuca (PE); and Governance: Balneário Camboriú (SC).
