Ragu Raghuram has assumed the role of CEO and member of the Board of Directors of VMware, to which he was appointed by the company's Board of Directors. An industry veteran, Raghuram is a strategic leader who previously served as VMware's Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Cloud Products and Services.

“I'm excited to have Raghu take over as CEO of VMware. Throughout his career, he has led with integrity and conviction, playing a key role in VMware's success,” comments Michael Dell, Chairman of the Board of Directors at VMware. “Raghu is now in a position to architect the future of VMware, helping customers and partners accelerate their digital business in this multi-cloud world.”

Since joining VMware in 2003, Raghuram has helped guide the company's strategic direction and the evolution of its technology throughout the company's rich history. He helped grow the virtualization business, drove the software-defined data center strategy, created and guided SaaS and cloud computing transformation efforts, played a key role in VMware's M&A strategy, and was instrumental in fostering partnerships with Dell Technologies, hyperscalers, among others.

“VMware is uniquely positioned to lead the age of multi-cloud computing with an end-to-end software platform that spans clouds, data center and edge, helping to accelerate our customers' digital transformations,” says Raghu Raghuram. “I am honored and excited to have been chosen to lead this company into a new phase of growth. We have a huge opportunity, we have the right solutions, the right team and we will continue to execute with focus, passion and agility.”

“After thorough and careful research, the Board concluded that Raghu is the best person to lead the company as CEO because he embodies our innovative culture, represents our values and has a clear vision for the future of VMware,” says Paul Sagan, Lead independent director of VMware. "We also want to thank Zane Rowe for his leadership as interim CEO and the crucial role he continues to play as CFO."

VMware also announced that Sumit Dhawan has been named president, leading all go-to-market functions, including global sales and partners and commercial organization, customer experience and success (CXS), marketing and communications. With his extensive experience in building and expanding subscription businesses and his customer-centric orientation, Dhawan is ideally suited to taking the lead on these teams. The executive served as senior vice president and director of customers for VMware, where he helped design the business strategy for emerging multi-cloud and subscription offerings, transforming how customers can consume the company's services.

Sanjay Poonen, former COO of Customer Operations, made the personal decision to leave VMware after his 7 years with the company. Before his last position, he led the End-User Computing area. “On behalf of the Board and the company, we thank Sanjay for his many contributions to VMware and we wish him well in his future endeavors,” comments Sagan.
