Implementing Artificial Intelligence in an ethical manner has gained new urgency as global consumer concerns increase. Transparency about data collection and subsequent use has come into the main focus in recent months with the GDPR issue in Europe. And now, the general data protection law – LGPD, in Brazil.

Sage, the UK multinational market leader in cloud business management solutions, has released the document “Building a Competitive and Ethical Artificial Intelligence Economy”, which addresses important and unanswered questions about Artificial Intelligence. The document from Sage, which has more than 3 million customers in 23 countries, was compiled with input from global companies and government officials. It outlines some directions for companies and society to leverage technologies based on Artificial Intelligence in an ethical, reliable and sustainable way.

“The danger of objectifying and trivializing AI is that we don't realize the valuable opportunity it presents. It is critical that we address the ethical issues posed by AI head-on. As an established company embracing this technology, we believe it is our responsibility to do this to our colleagues, customers and society at large,” said Kriti Sharma, vice president of Artificial Intelligence at Sage. “We know that the businesses we serve – from small to large – can realize huge productivity gains by embracing AI. But we need industry and government to help pave the way for ethical issues and move the global conversation forward.”

Below are four points that Sage believes will guide companies:

The first is Introduction to artificial intelligence corporate governance and an ethical framework for its application. Companies should develop and review their guidelines, with governments playing the role of regulators to support specific sectors in implementing best practices.

Another important point is demystifying AI, that is, engaging ethicists to explore how AI accountability applies to specific corporate ambitions.

Then, the trust of employees and entrepreneurs in AI must be promoted. While companies must keep their stakeholders abreast of their advances and goals regarding the use of AI, governments must carry out awareness campaigns to reduce the inhibition of technology in everyday life.

Integrating AI into workforce performance is also identified by Sage as critical. Human resources departments should integrate the use of data into their processes in order to monitor labor market requirements and the qualifications of potential future employees. On the part of the administrations, it should be ensured that young people finish their training with sufficient knowledge and skills in the field of Artificial Intelligence to enable them to integrate competitively into the labor market.
