A project that uses artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things to ensure the safety of firefighters in risky activities, such as firefighting and rescue, was the winner of the Call For Code 2019 global challenge, organized through a partnership between IBM and David Clark Cause.

Called Prometeo, the solution was developed by a startup in Barcelona whose team includes a nurse, a firefighter and software developers. The project combines hardware and software across multiple IBM Cloud services. The health device – which is the size of a smartphone and attached to a firefighter's arm – has several sensors that measure key variables, including temperature, humidity and smoke concentration.

From there, the device emits light signals, where green means everything is under control, and yellow or red colors indicate that the user is in danger. This information is collected and transmitted to IBM's Cloud IoT platform and then to fire command centers, which can monitor the health of each firefighter in real time.

As a result, the team behind Prometeo won the grand prize of US$ 200,000, as well as the chance to have the project developed and implemented through Code and Response, a program with resources to create, strengthen, test and implement solutions at scale created for the challenge.
