Progress announced the launch of the Progress OpenEdge Developer Kit: Classroom Edition. It is an application development toolkit for download totally free by students, universities, new developers and entrepreneurs. The initiative is aimed at encouraging the next generation of developers who need to expand their knowledge about developing business applications for greater professional growth.

The kit offers students, novice developers and future entrepreneurs a complete package of powerful yet easy to use and learn tools. The initiative aims to contribute to the work of software schools and universities, which face the challenge of preparing their students for the use of advanced technologies that are emerging - which are still in the development stage - also to encourage innovation, through the creation of unpublished programs.

According to Matthew Gharegozlou, Vice President of Progress for Latin America, the free release of the OpenEdge developer kit contributes to increasing, in the region, the contingent of developers capable of offering suitable solutions for the so-called third platform, which includes applications related to the phenomena of mobility, analytical intelligence, cloud computing and interaction on social networks. "IDC studies show that the third platform is expected to attract CIOs' 57% priority investments in Latin America. But the speed of disruption has been faster than the training of developers ready for this world," says Gharegozlou.

According to data from the American market, jobs for application developers are expected to jump 32% between 2010 and 2020. It is estimated that, in this period, around 300 thousand new vacancies are appearing, representing one of the biggest increases in occupancy rates today .
