Professor at the Faculty of Sciences, at Unesp in Bauru, João Paulo Papa, from the Department of Computing, together with professor Xin-She Yang, at Middlesex University – UK, publishes the book "Bio-Inspired Computation and Applications in Image Processing ", translated into Portuguese as: Bioinspired Computing and its applications in image processing.

The book, one of the few that deals with the subject so specifically, was released by Editora Academic Press and is mainly aimed at the areas of Computer Science, Electrical and Medical Engineering. It brings together the knowledge of the two different areas for problem solving. There are around twenty authors from all over the world involved in the publication's collaboration.

Bioinspired computing proposes to solve nature-based optimization problems. “This technique is easier and simpler to work with, in addition to, in most cases, having better results”. “An example that we can give of this optimization in nature is in the case of bee hives, which have their combs in a hexagonal shape to store as much honey as possible”, he adds.

Image processing, on the other hand, studies the problems that use images, treating them, making them better and clearer, and then artificial intelligence can read them. “This occurs in a mammography exam, for example, the image processing will make the image seen through the exam be clear and verify if there is any lump or not”, he says.

The publication suggests the use of bio-inspired computing to facilitate image processing and then insert artificial intelligence. An example of this is when you have a license plate with the letters and numbers blurred, and with the use of both techniques, you can improve the sharpness for better visualization.
