In its fourth edition, the award, which has the support and management of ETCO, recognizes initiatives to combat piracy in Brazil

The National Council for Combating Piracy and Crimes against Intellectual Property (CNCP) has opened applications for the 2014 edition of the National Award for Combating Piracy (PNCP 2014). The initiative, which is supported and managed by the Brazilian Institute for Competition Ethics (ETCO), identifies and recognizes projects by public and private entities that have excelled in fighting piracy and other crimes against intellectual property.

The executive director of ETCO, Heloísa Ribeiro, highlights the importance of the award for improving the business environment in the country. “Piracy is one of the great ills of the Brazilian economy. The PNCP motivates institutions so that they feel recognized and are committed to facing the problem, seeking to be better and better”, he says.

The PNCP's intention is to recognize projects that bring benefits to society, the economy, that are innovative and creative, that present good planning and coordination and that can serve as an example and motivation for other institutions.

This year, the PNCP will have three categories, defined according to the nature of the projects registered: educational/preventive, economic and repressive. The projects will be evaluated by a judging committee composed of the CNCP president and invited experts, who will use pre-established criteria such as benefit to society, innovation, creativity and planning, among others.

The three best projects in each category will be awarded at a ceremony to be held on December 3, in Brasília (DF). Applications are open until the 31st of October.

About ETCO
The Brazilian Institute of Competition Ethics, ETCO, is a civil society organization of public interest (Oscip) founded in 2003 with the objective of identifying, discussing, proposing and supporting actions, practices and projects that result in concrete improvement of the business environment in Brazil. To this end, it works to influence decision-makers to adopt measures aimed at reducing tax evasion, illegal trade and informality, as well as actions to simplify the tax system and combat corruption and other misconduct. The institute seeks to maintain a strong presence in Brazilian business and political circles, with the objective of creating mechanisms and tools that strengthen competition ethics. There are three action strategies: to encourage studies on the factors that encourage these misconduct; propose and support initiatives, actions or changes in legal texts and administrative practices; and develop and support actions to raise public opinion about the harmful social and economic effects and dangers of these illegalities and social leniency with these deviations from ethical behavior.
