The use of information and communication technology expands in government agencies and generates savings in public resources. The most recent example comes from the Federal Highway Police (PRF), which expects to save R$ 5 million a year by implementing the Electronic Information System (SEI) in the electronic processing of its documents and processes. The Information Technology (IT) tool, offered free of charge by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MP), began to be used on January 4 by the department in all 21 Regional Superintendencies, five Regional Districts, 150 Police Stations and 400 Inspection Posts spread across Brazil.

“Using the SEI is very important for us to speed up the processes, because around 600 points of service for citizens and sometimes a document took weeks to go from one point to another in Brazil. Now this will be instantaneous”, explains José Luis Pinheiro Gomes, manager of the Electronic Process Project within the scope of the PRF. According to the federal highway police, the use of the system is also important to map the flows and standardize the procedures of the 11,000 employees of the agency registered in the system.

For the Secretary of Information Technology of the MP, Cristiano Heckert, the use of the tool changes the work routine of public servants. “SEI eliminates the use of paper, now processes and documents can be signed by tablets and cell phones, it is a true revolution in public management”, he says.

The National Waterway Transport Agency (Antaq) and the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes) also implemented the SEI. With this latest addition, the number of bodies that effectively use the system in the Federal Public Administration (APF) rose to 21. According to Decree No. 8,539, all APF bodies must send the implementation schedule for the use of electronic administrative process to the Information Technology Secretariat (STI) until April of this year.
