Last Tuesday, September 24th, agents from the 1st Police Station of Itajaí, SC, carried out a search and seizure operation in four software resellers located in Itajaí, Santa Catarina. During the operation, delegate Flavia Rigoni Gonçalves' team seized 74 media suspected of containing illegal copies of computer programs.

Police authorities in several cities in Brazil have been carrying out strong action to combat piracy, carrying out search and seizure operations in resellers suspected of selling pirated software. In the last week alone, actions were carried out in Curitiba and Araucária, in Paraná, and in the São Paulo cities of Itu and Piracicaba. As a result, 7 resellers suspected of selling pirated software were approached and 115 media were seized containing unlicensed computer programs, in addition to pen drives, hard drives and serials for activating computer programs.

These actions were carried out as a result of investigations and had the support of the Brazilian Association of Software Companies (ABES), which carries out intense work, together with police authorities in all regions of Brazil, to repress the commercialization of pirated software.

Unfair competition: technical losses and legal risks

Aware of issues related to the Defense of Intellectual Property and the Fight Against Unfair Competition, ABES maintains the Legal Entrepreneur campaign www.empreendedorlegal.org.br which discloses information about the technical harms of using pirated software, legal risks of IT non-compliance with software laws, and recommendations on software asset management programs.

“These actions to combat piracy help to repress commercialization for both the end user and micro and small companies, reducing unfair competition in several sectors, including the software reseller sector. By operating with their legalized software licenses, entrepreneurs create an environment of fair competition with their competitors, who invest in technology. This attitude contributes to the increase in employment and supports economic growth, making the country more competitive”, comments Jorge Sukarie, president of ABES.

New whistleblower portal against Software Piracy

As part of efforts to reduce software piracy in Brazil, ABES, together with (BSA) The Software Alliance, launched a software piracy whistleblower portal, the www.denunciepirataria.org.br, focusing on companies and resellers that use or sell programs without proper licensing.
Complaints are anonymous and must be submitted through the website. After being investigated by the two associations and, if there is evidence of irregularity, the necessary measures will be taken so that the cases are resolved quickly. Entities can communicate with software manufacturers, local authorities and file lawsuits to ensure that Brazil's software law is respected.
