Police authorities in several cities in Brazil have been taking strong action to combat piracy, carrying out search and seizure operations at resellers suspected of selling pirated software. With the logistical support of ABES, which maintains a Anonymous Reports of Software Piracy (www.denunciepirataria.org.br) in partnership with BSA (The Software Alliance), it was possible to strengthen the investigative work to identify piracy outbreaks. As a result, in June alone, actions were carried out in the states of Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and São Paulo.

The cities contemplated so far were: Sorocaba, Campinas, Itu, Jundiaí and Ribeirão Preto, Santos, São Vicente and Guarujá, in São Paulo; Londrina and Curitiba, in Paraná; Novo Hamburgo, Porto Alegre and São Leopoldo, in Rio Grande do Sul; Balneário Camboriú, in Santa Catarina and Nova Iguaçu, in Rio de Janeiro.
In total, the authorities addressed 61 resellers suspected of selling pirated software and seized 1165 media, in total, suspected of containing unlicensed computer programs, in addition to pen drives, hard disks and serials for activating computer programs.

Efforts to reduce the crime of piracy in Brazil

ABES carries out an intense work, together with the authorities in all regions of Brazil, to repress the commercialization of illegal media. In addition to the Complaints portal, the entity also works with an educational campaign Legal Entrepreneur www.empreendedorlegal.org.br to alert Brazilian businessmen about the legal risks provided for in Brazilian laws against Unfair Competition and Defense of Intellectual Property and possible technical damages when investing in pirated software.

“This crime harms not only the national software market but society as a whole. Piracy works against the grain of the country's economic growth and prosperity, contributing to organized crime and preventing the growth of markets, the creation of jobs and the proper collection of taxes, which could be reverted to benefits for society, such as public safety and education", says Jorge Sukarie, president of ABES.
