Police authorities in several cities in Brazil have been conducting strong actions to combat piracy, through search and seizure operations at resellers suspected of selling pirated software. With the logistical support of ABES, which maintains a portal for Anonymous Complaints of Software Piracy (www.denunciopirataria.org.br) in partnership with BSA (The Software Alliance), it was possible to strengthen the investigative work to identify outbreaks of piracy . As a result, in June alone, actions were carried out in the states of Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo.

The cities contemplated so far were: Porto Alegre, Novo Hamburgo and São Leopoldo, in Rio Grande do Sul; Curitiba and Londrina, in Paraná; Nova Iguaçu, Rio de Janeiro; Balneário Camboriú, in Santa Catarina; Sorocaba, Campinas, Jundiaí, Itu, Ribeirão Preto, Santos, São Vicente and Guarujá, in São Paulo.

In total, the authorities approached 59 resellers suspected of selling pirated software, with seizures that exceed 1150 media suspected of containing unlicensed computer programs, in addition to pen drives, hard disks and serials for activating computer programs.

“The new Anonymous Complaints portal has been supporting police investigations, which have sought to repress the spread of these illicit copies among traders, carrying out searches and seizures of any amount, whether one media or a thousand. All equipment containing copies of these programs are also being seized, such as pen-drives, external hard disks or serials for activating the software”, says Jorge Sukarie, president of ABES.

Number of resellers approached by State:
Paraná (Curitiba and Londrina): 13
Rio de Janeiro (Nova Iguaçu): 5
Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre, Novo Hamburgo and São Leopoldo): 9
São Paulo (Sorocaba, Campinas, Jundiaí, Itu, Ribeirão Preto, Santos, São Vicente and Guarujá): 29
