Investees and investors show how to attract resources to innovate

Among the highlights of the ABES Software Conference 2013, which takes place on August 21st, in São Paulo, Alexandre Villela, director of Intel Capital, will present an overview of the Venture Capital industry and the role of Intel Capital in this process. Intel Capital is a strategic investment organization that focuses its activities on new companies that seek technological innovation around the world. “For us, it is a great pleasure to meet companies that may fit into possible targets of investment. Furthermore, it is important to spread the culture of Venture Capital/Private Equity among businesspeople”, he adds.

According to Villela, Intel Capital invests in diverse companies that offer hardware, software and services for the business, home, mobility, health, Internet, digital media and semiconductor manufacturing segments. “Since 1991, Intel Capital has invested more than US$ 10.8 billion in more than 1,276 companies in 54 countries. During this period, 201 portfolio companies became public on various stock exchanges around the world and 317 were acquired or participated in mergers. In 2012, Intel Capital invested US$ 352 million in 150 companies, with approximately 57% of the funds invested outside North America”, informs the executive.

For a company to be selected by Intel Capital, Villela explains that several factors are considered, including strategic fit with Intel's business, growth profile, segment in which it operates – it needs to have synergy with areas in which we are actively seeking opportunities – it must be relatively large and have good growth prospects, management and business model scalability.

The Case of Pixeon

Pixeon, a Brazilian company that pioneered the development of PACS – Picture Archiving and Communication Systems, based in Florianópolis (SC), was the first company in its segment to receive financial support from Intel Capital. In 2012, it merged with Medical Systems, from São Bernardo do Campo, with a solid positioning in the clinical and laboratory management market and more than 20 years of experience in the healthcare area, giving rise to Pixeon Medical Systems. The bold strategic decision placed Brazil against players international and globally recognized, paving the way for national technological development and growth opportunities for local professionals.

Roberto Ribeiro da Cruz, the company's CEO, will participate in the ABES Conference 2013 to talk about this successful journey and give valuable tips for those who are also looking for sources of financing to innovate. “I will share our experience in the process of raising funds for innovation and growth, through credit and development lines (FINEP/CNPQ) and investment funds (Intel). I will also address the main changes, challenges and results obtained after obtaining the resources”, he explains. “It is an excellent opportunity to exchange experiences and insights about the opportunities and challenges we have as entrepreneurs and businesspeople in the segment”, he adds.
