During the International Conference of the Society for Design and Process Science (SDPS 2015), held in Texas (USA) last November, with the theme Convergence, an award was held to honor researchers who addressed, in their studies, the theme of scientific transformation and innovation, with an emphasis on Value Based Process, Software and Systems Engineering.

Among the awarded scientists, the highlight was the gold medal in Software Engineering received by Brazilian professor Fuad Gattaz Sobrinho, from UNASP-SP (Brazil), UAB (USA), UT at Commerce (USA), Distinguished Research Professor at NJIT ( USA) and at the University of Dortmund (Germany), together with researchers CV Ramammorthy, Raymond T. Yeh, Herbert Weber, Mehmet Aksid and Carl Petri.

The award represents a historic milestone for the Brazilian Software Engineering area, as the award is equivalent to the Fields Medal, which has already consecrated mathematicians such as the Brazilian Artur Ávila. In addition to this field, the award included researchers from the areas of Chemistry, Biology, Economics and Physics. Check out more details about the achievement in the interview that researcher Fuad Gattaz Sobrinho granted to the ABES Portal.

What does winning the award mean?

This award in Transformative Science in Software Engineering recognizes our work as a new transdisciplinary software engineering paradigm that applies to any area of knowledge. I didn't expect to receive it and neither was my expectation. I was very happy that Brazil won the Fields Medal in Mathematics (Arthur Ávila) and now the Gold Medal in Software Engineering.

What is the Value Based Process, Software and Systems Engineering, criteria addressed by the award?
As the name says, it is a new integrative theory in management, science and engineering that integrates the Process, Systems and Software sciences, which until now were separated by different theories. The big difference is that sciences are based on functions and this integrative science is value centric.

What is the weight of this distinction for the continuity of your research?
I am authorized by international organizations and from several countries to develop projects to break the borders and, thus, I will continue the implementation of Laboratories Vivos in several institutions.

What is the impact of this recognition for Software Engineering in Brazil, as a whole?
We will start to implement a scientific development cooperation network in Software Engineering, promoting product, service and business innovations around the world in various sectors.

At what stage is Software Engineering in Brazil compared to other more developed countries?
The development of technology and academic training in software engineering in Brazil is in its infancy and requires a lot of investment from the private and public sectors. Our schools teach discipline to apply products developed predominantly in the USA and with little technological content. We need to see software engineering as strategic and protocol generator in all areas of science and engineering in a transdisciplinary way.
