79% of those who use the Internet have a profile on social networks

The ICT Kids Online Brazil 2013 Survey, carried out by the Regional Center for Studies for the Development of the Information Society (CETIC.br), of the Information and Coordination Center of Ponto BR (NIC.br), reveals that 79% of Internet users between 9 and 17 years old have a profile on the social network they use the most, an increase of 9% compared to 2012.

Cell phones are used by just over half of children and adolescents to access the network (53%). In 2012, this proportion was 21%. Internet access through tablets grew from 2%, in 2012, to 16%, in 2013. Desktop computers continue to be the most used devices to access the Internet by this audience: 71%.

Conducted between September 2013 and January 2014, the survey interviewed 2,261 Internet users aged between 9 and 17 across the country. The same number of parents or guardians of the selected youths (2,261) were interviewed to identify their children's experiences as Internet users. Check out the survey highlights.

Network access environment – The most mentioned environment is the home room (68%), followed by the child/teenager's room (57%). The latter showed an increase of 31% compared to the previous year. “The results indicate an increase in Internet use in places where children or adolescents find more privacy, such as the bedroom. This represents a challenge for parents when it comes to mediating the use of the network”, emphasizes Alexandre Barbosa, manager of CETIC.br. With the increase in Internet use inside households, paid access centers, such as lanhouses, are mentioned in a smaller proportion, going from 35%, in 2012, to 22%, in 2013.

Most Accessed Network – 77% point to Facebook as the most used social network. Orkut, which was the main social network for 27% of children and adolescents in 2012, was cited as the most used network by only 1% of young people in 2013. Regarding the activities carried out, the following stand out: research for school work (87% ), watch videos (68%), and download music or movies (50%).

Skills - 58% claimed to know how to change privacy settings on social media profiles. Additionally, 42% of Internet users in the same age group claimed to know how to compare different websites on the web to know if the information is true.

Risk situations – 38% added people they've never met in person to their friends or contacts lists on social media. “Older age groups report more potential risk activities compared to younger ones”, explains Alexandre Barbosa.
Parent mediation – The conversation about what children do on the Internet (81%) is the most cited action. Already 43% of parents and guardians claim to carry out activities together with their children on the network. When questioned about the risks, only 8% of the parents and guardians of the selected young people believe that their child has experienced some discomfort or embarrassment on the Internet – a percentage similar to that verified in 2012 (6%).

Consumption and advertising – that 61% reported having seen advertising on social networks, while 30% did so on gaming sites, and among those with a profile, 57% claimed to have “liked”, 36% “shared”, 21% “disliked” and 20% “blocked” some advertisement or advertising they had contact with on social networks.
