There was an increase of 13% in the number of companies that suffered attacks

EMC Corporation announces the results of a new survey revealing that organizations still fail to raise awareness about the growing challenges of protecting their data and, as a result, are suffering the economic impact of losing information.
The results of the EMC Global Data Protection Index 2016, an independent study by Vanson Bourne on corporate backup in 18 countries, revealed that while companies have managed to reduce the impact of the four major traditional data loss risks1, they are not prepared for the new threats that arise and are paying dearly for it.
Compared to the EMC Global Data Protection Index 2014, 13% more companies experienced data loss or interruption in the last 12 months, generating a cost of, on average, US$ 914,000.
"The world we live in is changing rapidly. Technology and storage are evolving at the speed of light - and the threats that businesses have to face as well. Unfortunately, our research shows that many companies are unaware of the potential impact of these changes and nor are they planning for them, which is a threat in its own right. EMC continues to think ahead of the challenges our customers face, offering innovative tools like our isolated recovery solutions that help ensure they don’t have to pay ransom. for your data ", - says Marcos Nehme, director of RSA's technical pre-sales division for Brazil, Caribbean and Latin America in the EMC security segment.
EMC commissioned the updated survey to help organizations recognize and prepare for the ever-changing landscape of corporate data threats. The results of the EMC Global Data Protection Index 2016 survey identified three main challenges for modern data protection:
1) Threats to data protection
Almost a quarter (23%) of the companies participating in the survey suffered data loss or unplanned systems outages due to an external security breach. This number increases to more than a third (36%) if we also consider internal violations.
Companies are increasingly faced with threats not only to their core data, but also to protection and backup. Be it combating cyber extortion that asks for money to unlock data encrypted by ransomware or other risks to which backup and protection data are exposed, thus needing to find solutions that put your "data of last resort" out of harm's way.
2) Threats to data in the cloud
More than 80% of respondents indicated that their organizations will run at least part of eight core business applications2 in the public cloud over the next two years, although less than half said they protect data in the cloud from corruption and less than half also from exclusion. More than half said they had already run their email solution in the public cloud. And, in general, respondents already had an average of 30% of their IT environments based on the public cloud.
Since most software as a service (SaaS) application providers do not offer protection against accidental loss or exclusion by employees, EMC believes that it is essential for organizations to include cloud applications in their overall protection strategies of data.
3) Needs of protection in constant evolution
More than 70% of the respondent organizations did not fully believe that they could recover their systems or data in the event of loss of information or unexpected downtime on the systems.
Confidence also wanes with respect to datacenter performance, with companies' 73% stating that they are not very confident that their solutions will be able to keep up with the faster pace of performance and new features of flash storage.
EMC has a portfolio of data protection and availability services to help customers ensure that their most valuable data is protected from cyber attacks and meets organizational availability and RTO (data recovery time) requirements.
“Our experts understand the latest compliance requirements in the industry, are experienced in implementing these technologies and have extensive knowledge of modern strategies such as Isolated Recovery (Isolated Recovery Solution provides an isolated environment for protected copy and data integration) - says Marcos Nehme, director of RSA's technical pre-sales division for Brazil, Caribbean and Latin America in the EMC security segment.
Methodology
The “EMC Global Data Protection Index 2016” survey was conducted independently by Vanson Bourne between March and April 2016. Respondents are IT decision makers from public and private organizations with at least 250 employees. Vanson Bourne spoke to a total of 2,200 respondents in 18 countries - 200 in the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany. The other countries had 100 respondents each including Brazil.
What are the causes of your data loss and / or downtime on your systems?
   2016 2014
Hardware failure 45% 53%
Lack of energy 35% 39%
Software failure 34% 38%
Corruption of data 24% 29%
