The national industry is the main means of quality jobs, with registration and other benefits and it is an important element of the entire economy of the country. The share of the manufacturing industry in the Gross Domestic Product, which was 21.6% in 1985, dropped more than 10 percentage points in 30 years, and reached 11.40% in 2015, the same level as in 1947. Brazilian productive sector takes a leap, we cannot miss the historic opportunity to invest in innovation and seek more competitiveness not only in large industry, but also in small and medium-sized ones”, explains Guto Ferreira, President of the Brazilian Industrial Development Agency (ABDI) .

Thinking about the 4th industrial revolution that is underway, ABDI launched the National Startup Industry Connection Program, aiming at a new way of doing public policy, thinking in a disruptive way, that is, breaking with patterns that are dominant until now. . Basically, the initiative, which has an investment of R$ 50 million, over three years, creates a business environment between industries and startups, focusing on the digital integration of different steps of the industrial products value chain. There were 394 applicants, including industries, startups and institutions that support business development.

In the registration phase, 49 industries, 325 startups and 20 support institutions are registered. In addition to the 49 industries enrolled in the Program, another 362 companies in the sector were surveyed in the Innovation Survey (another ABDI program), all with more than 250 employees. However, one fact caught our attention. Among industries, 70% declare so far not to be connected with startups. Of these, 21% revealed that they are preparing and 27% still don't know how to do it. “This new industrial revolution necessarily involves startups and the sector is starting to realize this. The largest transport company in the world (UBER) does not have a single vehicle of its own. They broke all the standards of decades”, emphasizes the President.

The State of São Paulo leads the ranking of registered industries, with 19 players, followed by Santa Catarina with 7. The Southeast region of the country concentrates 58.7% of industries already registered, followed by the South region with 26.1%, Northeast and Central- West with 6.5% and North with 2.2%. “The State of Santa Catarina, more precisely the capital Florianópolis, is known today as the Brazilian Silicon Valley. The local government invested heavily to attract technology companies, mainly and today we can see the result. Industries want to be close to those who produce innovation”, says Ferreira.

The president of ABDI also emphasizes that the program was designed very carefully, so that all sides could see the potential that their partner could offer. “When we conceived this initiative, we were motivated by knowing that a century-old industry would not easily open its doors to nascent companies, often created by an 18-year-old boy, because if they did, they would kill his creativity. For this reason, the program focuses on promoting healthy integration, where the needs of the industry and the ability to create solutions of a young company are mapped, reducing risks for both sides. And this learning will be shared among all”, concludes Guto Ferreira, President of ABDI.
