Most Brazilian startups are maturing, but they still have a lot to do, especially in relation to international competitiveness. This was revealed by the Survey on Business Maturity of Nascent Brazilian Companies (startups), carried out by Outsource Brazil, one of the accelerators accredited by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) to be part of the federal program Startup Brasil, created to support new technology companies in the country.

The survey, which aimed to portray the current stage of business development of startups, was carried out in direct contact with companies in the sector from several states, during the period of the editions of the Outsource Brazil Boot Camp, with the application of a questionnaire directed to the main executives and employees, based on the adaptation of the methodology used in Silicon Valley to evaluate start-up companies. The diagnosis involved three dimensions: Management, Business and People.

105 entrepreneurs from 92 organizations in 10 Brazilian states were interviewed between April 2012 and March this year, who answered specific questions about the stage of their start-up companies. There were 10 questions allocated in the 3 dimensions and each question offered 4 possible stages of answers. Each respondent indicated the alternative that most corresponded to their view of their startup's current level of development.

"One of the most striking points of the survey is the fact that most companies, despite showing good market traction, are still far from the minimum level of international competitiveness. Less than 30% of companies presented a ready-made business and governance model to fight international competition or compete on an equal footing in other markets", comments Robert Janssen, CEO of Outsource Brazil.
