Growing demand for IT skills across all industries

The importance of computing education for the next generation cannot be underestimated. Recently released, Beyond Tech: Growing Demand for IT Skills in Non-Tech Industries is the third in a series of reports that examine how demand for computer science skills is spreading across the job market. The report, produced by Burning Glass Technologies in collaboration with Oracle Academy, contains an analysis of data from more than 150 million unique jobs in 2018 in the United States to identify the computer science skills employers require in various positions.

The report's main findings include:

IT jobs are on the rise – especially outside the technology sector. In 2018, there were 6.9 million IT jobs online, representing 24% of all jobs. The vast majority of them, 89%, were for non-tech industries. Between 2013 and 2018, IT employment growth in the technology sector was 40%; outside of technology, IT employment growth increased by 65%.

Developing IT skills pays off. IT jobs, inside and outside the technology sector, pay substantially more than non-IT jobs, with salary premiums of US$ 20,000 or more. The estimated lifetime earnings of IT workers, regardless of industry, far exceed those of non-IT workers or minimum wage workers. On average, IT workers can earn 19% more than non-IT workers, or US$ 802,129 over a career.
