This is the first action that was supported by ABES in the Northeast. In 2013, with the entity's logistical support, 129 dealers were approached by the police and approximately 3,000 items of unproven origin were seized.

Police authorities of the Police Station for Repression of Crimes Against Intangible Property of the State of Pernambuco carried out, last Tuesday (09) a search and seizure action against a computer reseller suspected of selling counterfeit copies of computer programs in Recife (PE) . Under the command of delegate Germano Bezerra, CDs and DVDs containing illegal copies of computer programs were seized.
This is the first operation in the Northeast, in 2014, which has the logistical support of the Brazilian Association of Software Companies (ABES), an entity that carries out various actions to combat software piracy in Brazil.

In 2013 alone, 129 computer resellers were approached by local police authorities in the South and Southeast regions with suspicion of selling counterfeit computer programs. In total, police agents, with logistical support from ABES, managed to seize approximately 3,000 items from these resales, including software and illegal serials for activating computer programs.

penalties provided

According to the entity's president, Jorge Sukarie, stores that sell this type of product are subject to penalties on the sale of unlicensed software. “By infringing copyright, these computer resellers promote unfair competition in the market in which they operate. In addition, they can be criminally charged with a penalty that can range from six months to two years in prison or be fined, when it is not possible to identify the exact amount, with values up to 3 thousand times the price of each program used or reproduced. ”, highlights Sukarie.

consumer harm

A recent study by IDC, released in March this year, reveals that about 47% of computers purchased from computer resellers in Brazil are already “pre-infected”, with “malware”, including “Trojans” and other powerful viruses. “Consumers should pay attention and request proof of software licenses installed on their computer. This is because, in many cases, these stores sell equipment with pirated computer programs already installed, without the consumer suspecting that they are being harmed”, highlights Sukarie.

anonymous reports

Given this scenario and to protect consumers, ABES, together with BSA – The Software Alliance, maintains the Software Piracy Denunciation Portal, which in 2013 ended the year with 31,000 complaints involving the sale, acquisition or use of software programs. illegal. Thus, 12 thousand companies were inspected and most of them have already performed the regularization of the software in use.

“Whenever the customer suspects the origin of the computer programs offered in these stores, he can make an anonymous complaint through the portal, available at the electronic address http://www.denuniepirataria.org/. If you prefer, you can also download the Portal application, available on Android and IOS platforms”, says Sukarie.
