Initiative is by ABES and BSA to protect the intellectual property of software in Brazil

The Software Piracy Complaints Portal has just been launched (www.denunciepirataria.org.br), an initiative of the Brazilian Association of Software Companies (ABES) and The Software Alliance (BSA), an international association to combat software piracy. The new channel will receive anonymous reports about companies and resellers that use or sell programs without proper licensing.

"When we reduce piracy in Brazil, we generate jobs, contribute to the country's economic development and improve the image of Brazilian companies in the world scenario", evaluates Gérson Schmitt, president of ABES, stressing that the initiative is important to promote fair competition and contribute to the country's growth.

In Brazil, for every 10 programs purchased or downloaded over the internet, more than five are obtained illegally, according to data from the BSA, which estimates that if the piracy rate in the country were reduced from 53% to 43%, industry revenue would increase nearly R$ 8 billion, of which 74% would remain within the country, in addition to the generation of 12 thousand new jobs.

The president of BSA in Brazil, Frank Caramuru, recalls that irregularities in the sale and use of software are subject to a prison sentence of 1 to 4 years, a fine and indemnity that can reach 3000 times the value of each software.
