Mining Lab 2 focuses on innovative projects in the areas of automation, Internet of Things (IoT)/IT, logistics, circular economy and mineral concentration in five countries

Nexa, Votorantim Metais' new brand, opens registration for Mining Lab 2, a program to support entrepreneurs and the development of technological innovations for the mining and metallurgy areas. The second edition of the program will select the best projects presented in the areas of automation, Internet of Things/IT, logistics, circular economy and mineral concentration.

Nexa's objective is to apply innovative solutions to its industrial processes, opening space for new ideas. Developed in partnership with the accelerator Techmall, Mining Lab 2 will have a total investment of US$ 2.4 million without requiring a corporate counterpart in startups.

“The Mining Lab is a collaborative way of thinking and building technological solutions and, thus, increasing competitiveness in the face of the challenges of our business. It is an initiative that oxygenates the company's environment and opens space for the development of new ideas, within the concept of collective intelligence. It's a new way of thinking and exchanging knowledge”, says Jones Belther, vice president of mineral exploration and technology.

The first phase of the program will select 36 startups that will undergo an online immersion period. Of these, 24 will be chosen for face-to-face training in which they will develop a business case with solutions to the challenges. At the end of this period, a panel made up of Nexa professionals will select the 12 finalist proposals that will receive financial investment, weekly advice from qualified professionals over a year, qualification in financial, legal and marketing management, in addition to access to facilities and technical information on Nexa's operating units.

Applications are open from January 15 to March 18, 2018 on the Mining Lab 2 website and available to startups from Brazil, the United States, Canada, Peru and Chile. The internationalization of the program, whose first edition only had the participation of Brazilian startups, follows the international expansion movement of Nexa, which went public on the New York (USA) and Toronto (Canada) Stock Exchanges in October 2017.

Launched in 2016, the Mining Lab is a pioneering program in the mining industry. The first edition, which is still ongoing, had as challenges the areas of renewable energy and nanotechnology. Five projects are in the industrial pilot development phase and should be implemented in the processes of Nexa's operations at the end of the process.
