Report brings the main characteristics of the organizations that grew the most in Brazil in the last four years

The Insper-Endeavor Chair, in partnership with Neoway, one of the main Brazilian companies in Big Data Analytics and technology applied to business, carried out an analysis of the persistent high-growth companies (EACs) scenario in Brazil. The study was based on the knowledge generated from the Neoway platform.

According to the OECD, an international institution that promotes economic and social development policies around the world, to be considered an EAC the organization must have at least 10 employees and present a growth of at least 20% per year by 3 consecutive years. Persistent EACs, in turn, are those that show continuous growth in a given period.

“The starting point was organizations active between 2010 and 2012 to identify the initial group of EACs. Within this universe, we analyzed the results achieved by companies until 2016 and selected those that showed continuous growth in the period. Applying all these criteria, it was possible to identify 16,142 persistent EACs, distributed across the five regions of Brazil”, explains Lucas de Paula, CTO (Chief Technology Officer) at Neoway.

High-growth companies have been gaining prominence in the economic debate, because they have been playing an increasingly relevant role in generating jobs for the country. According to IBGE data, the number of people employed by EACs increased by 172%, from 2013 to 2015, reaching 3.5 million. In 2016, something around 1.8 million new opportunities emerged due to these types of organizations.

“We believe that the entrepreneurs at the head of High Growth Companies can be the country's great transformers. And, therefore, we strive to understand what makes these entrepreneurs so unique", says Camilla Junqueira, Director General of Endeavor. "This research is another step in that direction, showing the differences that exist within this group of companies and opening up several opportunities for us to understand the main challenges for the persistent growth of companies in Brazil", he adds.

The survey also points out that the group of persistent high-growth companies is not homogeneous. The division can be done into three main clusters. The first, and largest, comprises 10,121 firms that grew, on average, 106% during the analyzed period. The second, represented by 4,927, has a rate of 210%. Finally, there is also the one with the highest growth, in percentage, 930%, which is represented by another 1,094 companies.
“We were able to identify two main characteristics that favor persistent EACs. Companies located in regions with greater spending on Research and Development and where the population has more education are more likely to be in the groups with the highest growth”, comments Guilherme Fowler, Associate Professor at Insper and coordinator of the Endeavor Chair. “This area of research is quite vast and, in a way, still little explored. This represents both a disadvantage and an opportunity for future studies”, he adds.
