  • NEC has experienced constant global change throughout its 126 years of existence. Among the factors that have brought it to this position of relevance are its long-term vision and its strategy of constantly reinventing itself, as has happened recently.
  • It is worth highlighting that the company dared to decide to focus its portfolio mainly on the integration of solutions and the provision of managed services.

Surpassing the 100-year mark has increasingly become a major challenge for companies worldwide, especially in recent years, when the changes brought about by digital transformation often cause most organizations to fall by the wayside and close their doors.

To give you an idea, according to information released by Credit Suisse, the average age of a company listed on the S&P 500 (a list of the largest North American companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange) in the 1950s was around 60 years. Currently, the lifespan of organizations has decreased dramatically, and most don't even reach 20 years of existence. However, technological disruption—considered a decisive factor in company closures according to the financial giant's study—can also be considered a differentiator for staying current and, often, leading their respective businesses. The report also points out that automation is the number one "disruptive force" in this process.

THE NEC, a multinational company founded in Japan 126 years ago with the initial goal of being an electronics equipment manufacturer, saw technological transformation as a way to stay ahead of its time. Over the decades, the company has played a key role in technical developments across a variety of sectors, including televisions, which replaced black-and-white images with color, and the development of increasingly smaller and more powerful computers, among others. "NEC was present at major global technological milestones, such as the modernization of the telephone system, the creation of supercomputers, and even the launch of space satellites," says José Renato, president of NEC in Brazil.

The executive also highlights that the main virtues that have remained with the organization to this day are its long-term vision and its ability to reinvent itself over time. "If we analyze NEC's entire journey over these 126 years, its ability to plan for the future, outlining strategies for up to 50 years ahead, becomes clear. It's an organization that doesn't work in short-termism."

According to the president of NEC in Brazil, another point worth highlighting is the company's consistent customer-centric focus. To this end, the company has reinvented itself many times since its founding, aiming to offer customers what they truly need. "One example of this is the fact that the portfolio includes, among other offerings, network automation systems and managed services, solutions that fit perfectly into the context of today's organizations. The organization's decision to take this path is based on the expertise it has accumulated over decades in these activities and, thus, capitalizes on its greatest asset, which is the knowledge of its professionals, in addition to the fact that it is aligned with global technology trends, which point to these two areas," states the executive.

More than four decades of research that has enabled the improvement of digital biometrics and smart city solutions has made the Japanese multinational a global leader in these segments. For example, recognition from NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology), the most important benchmarking body in the market, has confirmed year after year the leadership of NEC's digital identification technologies as the fastest and most accurate in the world.

While many companies in the sector succumbed to digital transformations due to their inability to renew their business models, NEC chose to follow a path aligned with current market trends, moving beyond its manufacturing footprint and positioning itself as a solutions integrator and managed services provider. Today, particularly in Latin America, its primary focus is offering network orchestration, cybersecurity, digital identification, and smart city solutions.

Operations in Latin America

With over 50 years of experience in Latin America, NEC has been responsible for developing and implementing solutions that have changed people's lives.

In Brazil, for example, in 1972, the company conducted the first color television transmission test—a milestone for the country. Another major implementation by the Japanese multinational, an unprecedented national innovation, was the first mobile telephone system in Rio de Janeiro. These and other achievements in Latin America established the company as one of the most important telecommunications companies in the region.

The legacy of a centenarian

Whether in any region of the planet—or even in space—NEC proves every day why it is considered one of the longest-running and most relevant technology companies in history. Today, the company focuses on continuing this legacy with its corporate strategy—helping customers optimize their networks to the maximum without compromising security—and on the adoption of advanced digital biometrics and Smart Cities solutions by governments.
