The Ministry of Justice launched a public notice for the development of applications for computers, tablets and cell phones, based on the database of traffic accident bulletins from the Federal Highway Police (PRF). The objective is to create tools for viewing and accessing data of public interest that can, among other features, generate statistics on the times when the most fatalities occur, locate the most dangerous stretches of each road on the map or draw a profile of accidents. on the roads. Any interested person can register, individually or with a group of up to four people. Registration runs from August 30th to September 12th and the deadline for submitting applications ends on October 18th.

Traffic incident bulletins on federal highways contain detailed information since 2007 on each accident registered by the PRF. There are more than a million records with dozens of pieces of information, such as the characteristics of the vehicles involved, the identified cause of the accident, the number of people involved and a complete description of what happened. The database of traffic violations will also be published.

The general director of the PRF, Maria Alice Nascimento Souza, defends the maximum transparency of the information made available, even those about assessments. “These elements will help to better understand the reality of BRs, which is very different from urban traffic”, he explained. “We publicize the locations of the fines and, at the same time, the stretches with the highest incidence of accidents with victims, precisely so that society can help prioritize the tools that allow preserving life”, he adds.

The database allows numerous interpretations and the developers' creativity will be considered in the evaluation of the applications. The contest is part of an effort promoted by the Ministry of Justice to publish its databases in an “open format”. Open data consists of the publication and dissemination of data and public information on the Internet, so that they can be reused throughout society.

Three teams will be awarded, with the publication of their applications on the Brazilian Open Data Portal and on the Ministry of Justice Portal; will also receive W3C Brasil T-shirts and a certificate signed by the Minister of Justice. Team members who place 1st will each receive a device. The award ceremony is scheduled for the 21st and 22nd of November, during the 2nd National Open Data Meeting, to be held in Brasília/DF.

The initiative is the result of a partnership between the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management, the Comptroller General of the Union and the Internet Management Committee in Brazil (CGI.Br), represented by the Information and Coordination Center of Ponto BR (NIC .Br), through the Brazilian Office of W3C Brazil.
