Brazil is now one of 11 regions with on-premises Azure infrastructure

Microsoft announced the start of operations in the new Azure region, the company's cloud services platform, in Brazil. The expansion will allow customers to store data and applications in the country, giving more agility to companies and partners. Microsoft hopes that this expansion will help the company continue to gain market share in the enterprise segment, whether among large or small and medium-sized companies.

According to consultancy IDC, the cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) market – in which Azure is inserted – is expected to grow 50% in Brazil in 2014, totaling US$ 429 million. These numbers show the potential of this market and how much Microsoft can benefit from this growth through Azure.

The on-premises capacity offered by Microsoft Azure will allow companies to realize significant performance gains, including reduced latency, which will directly benefit application response time. In practice, local storage will shorten the distance traveled by the data. Customers will also be able to opt for local redundancy, which means their data will be replicated three times within the datacenter, helping with disaster recovery.

Microsoft Azure is experiencing an important moment globally, with results that indicate the strength of Microsoft's cloud platform in the market, with the division's worldwide revenue growing by 150% year on year.

“Microsoft is reinventing itself in all areas in which it operates and the start of operations in the new Azure region in Brazil represents a fundamental moment, expanding the benefits we offer to our current customers and helping us to attract new companies. We are the only company to offer a hybrid cloud platform that meets customer demand for a mixed infrastructure that covers both public and private clouds and, regardless of model, contributes to the development of the business. Brazil is now one of the 11 regions in the world to house an on-premises Azure infrastructure and the start of commercial operations will help to further boost our business”, says Mariano de Beer, president of Microsoft Brazil.

Interoperability and hybrid cloud are two of Azure's key competitive differentiators. The first concerns the platform's ability to interact with systems not based on Microsoft technology, including free software. The hybrid cloud, on the other hand, is the result of the company's concern to allow the customer to move freely between the public cloud model (both from Microsoft and its partner network) and private, without the fear of having to stick to only one of them.

Worldwide, Microsoft has invested more than US$ 1 billion in Azure, currently present in 90 countries. The product, which has been available in the country since 2010 for companies of all sizes, startups and developers, offers the power of the cloud with solutions that allow scalability, elasticity and security.

Microsoft Azure supports Windows and Linux virtual machines, SQL Server and Hadoop and open frameworks such as WordPress, Joomla and Drupal. Developers working in .NET, Java, PHP, Node.js and Python can use the SDK available for free at the link http://www.windowsazure.com/pt-br/downloads/.
