Gartner, the world leader in technology research and advice, reports that worldwide security software revenue reached US$ 21.4 billion in 2014, recording an increase of 5.3% compared to US$ 20.3 billion achieved in the year previous. This and other information will be presented during the Gartner Business Intelligence, Analytics & Information Management Conference, which will take place on June 23 and 24 at the Sheraton São Paulo WTC Hotel.

Low growth in endpoint protection platforms and decline in consumer security software—markets that together account for 39% of the total—displaced strong performance in high growth areas such as Security Event Management and Correlation (SIEM) , Secure Web Gateway (SWG), Identity Management and Administration (IGA) and Data Loss Prevention (DLP).

“Overall market growth increased slightly (5.3%) in 2014, compared to 4.9% in 2013. While the SWG segment experienced single-digit growth in 2014, hybrid and Cloud-based SWG deployments are becoming more and more popular. As organizations' corporate data traffic becomes more exposed on the internet, and moves beyond the control of traditional network security boundaries, SWG technologies remain an important part of the overall security technology strategy for most organizations. ” says Sid Deshpande, principal research analyst at Gartner.

Once again, Symantec was named the top security software vendor in terms of revenue, although the company suffered its second straight year of decline, falling 1.3% to US$3.7 billion. A 6.2% decrease in the consumer security software segment (which corresponds to 53% of Symantec's security software revenue) was the main cause of the decline in overall growth.

Security software revenue from runner-up Intel (McAfee) grew 4.6% in 2014 to reach US$1.8 million. Revenue declines in two major markets (consumer security software and endpoint protection platforms), which form 75% of security software revenue, offset healthy performance in other segments.

Third, IBM's security software revenue grew by 17% in 2014, reaching US$1.5 billion. Its SIEM software products grew by 21%, driven by the strong adoption of this product category by organizations and managed security service providers (MSSPs).

The DLP market grew by 15.8% compared to the previous year, reaching US$643 million in 2014, mainly due to Symantec's good results in this segment, which accounts for almost half of the entire market. The stable performance of the main suppliers also contributed to this remarkable growth. However, for Ruggero Contu, Research Director at Gartner, 2014 was the last year in which the market showed solid double-digit growth levels, given the expansion of in-channel DLP solutions (C-DLP) and "DLP lite ". "Most of the established providers in this space are transforming the way they deliver comprehensive DLP capabilities, and this transition period is likely to affect growth for years to come," he says.

The SIEM market grew by 11% in 2014, reaching revenue of US$1.6 billion. The intense focus on threat detection and response demonstrated by buyers of security features has contributed to the outstanding performance of this market segment. In addition to the corporate focus on purchasing SIEM technology on-premises, managed security service providers have emerged as a growing market for SIEM vendors to serve. Companies that initially adopted these solutions, particularly in emerging markets, were also directly responsible for this growth.
