The year was marked by the consolidation of ink tank equipment

The printer market continues to recover in Brazil. It grew by 21% in 2017 and 8% in 2018, with a total of 2.36 million machines sold, 61% for retail and 39% for the corporate market. Revenue increased by 14.7% compared to 2017 and was US$ 727 million. The data are from IDC Brasil, a leader in market intelligence, consulting services and conferences with the Information Technology and Telecommunications industries.

The IDC Quarterly Hardcopy Tracker Q4 2018 study also makes other cuts of the printing market in the country and, among other data, points out that of the 1.4 million machines sold in 2018 at retail, 748,700 were ink tank models, increase of 28% compared to 2017. The corporate market was responsible for the purchase of 913 thousand printers, of which 479 thousand were laser models, an increase of 9.8% in the annual comparison.

“The adoption of these technologies was not surprising, since since 2016 – and more rapidly in 2017 – we have noticed a growth in the sale of ink tank equipment, mainly for the domestic consumer and small businessmen, because despite an initial investment greater than the usual, they have high ink yield, in addition to multifunction, such as scanner and copying”, says Rodrigo Okayama Pereira, market analyst at IDC Brasil. And, in relation to laser models, he adds, “they remain the preferred ones by companies because they combine competitive cost per page, high capacity and printing speed, offering innovations in software and services, such as management, security and productivity for the most diverse niches. market”.

As for the 8% growth of the market in 2018, after a high of 21% in the previous year, this is not surprising as many replacements and upgrades were made in 2017. “That year, many home consumers, professionals and companies that were working with outdated equipment and putting off the switch since 2016, they took a breather and bought new printers. In addition to this fact, we had a promising start to the year, although the pace of the economy slowed down and the economy heated up during the quarters. In 2018, therefore, sales of 2.36 million printers represent a new lease of life for the market”, says the analyst at IDC Brasil.

Second half of 2018

From July to December 2018, revenue increased by 13.8% compared to the second half of 2017, with US$ 368.5M, but in volume the market was down 2.1%, with sales of 1.082M units. Of this total, 44% were ink tank equipment, 31% ink cartridge and 25% laser printers.

In retail, 708.8 thousand units were sold, most of which were ink tanks, with 401 thousand, an increase of 41.6% compared to the second half of 2017. In the corporate market, of the 373.9 thousand printers sold, 235.4 thousand were laser, high of 0.3%.

Unlike the last two years, when 51% of sales were made in the second half, in 2018, the first half represented 54% of units sold.

Expectations for 2019

For 2019, even in the face of expectations with the new government and the optimism of large companies, which can inject resources into the country, IDC predicts a conservative growth of 4.7%. “With the approval of the Pension Reform, stabilization of the dollar and other government projects to boost the economy, the growth of the printer sector in Brazil may be greater, but the forecast today is of a timid growth for the year”, concludes the analyst at IDC Brasil.
