The printer market continues to perform well in 2017 and above expectations projected for 2018 by IDC Brasil, a leader in market intelligence, consulting and conference services with the Information Technology and Telecommunications industries. According to the IDC Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker study, in the first half of 2018, 1.3 million pieces of equipment were sold in Brazil, which represents a growth of 18% compared to the same period last year and 1.3% more than IDC Brazil expected a period marked by political uncertainties and exchange rate variation. Of the total equipment sold, most were ink tank models, which registered a growth of 22% compared to the same period last year, with more than half a million units. Ink cartridge printers increased by 12%, with sales of over 470,000 units, and laser machines grew by 20%, with 266,000.

There was also a rise in revenue. There were US$ 356 million – 15% more than in the first half of 2017 -, with US$ 204 million generated by sales of laser equipment and US$ 152 million from inkjet models. The corporate segment, which represents the largest share of sales of laser models, was responsible for 70% of total market revenue and 42% of units sold, growing 22% in relation to the amount of sales in the first half of 2017. “At the beginning of 2018, when the market was already showing signs of recovery, business confidence increased, opening space for new investments”, says Rodrigo Okayama Pereira, market analyst at IDC Brasil. According to him, printing equipment is also at the pace of digital transformation and is increasingly seen as a service and not just a product. “Companies are concerned about security, productivity and connectivity, and printers and MFPs capable of connecting to the cloud and other devices such as tablets and cell phones are in demand. In addition to efficiently and quickly executing more than one task simultaneously, they offer solutions for data protection, increasing productivity and security in companies”, says Pereira.

The IDC Brasil analyst attributes the market growth in the first half of 2018 also to the efforts and creativity of manufacturers who, to drive results, are investing in specific niches, such as government, retail, health (healthcare) and education, with unique strategies. for each one. “Manufacturers took advantage of the good moment to expand the line of printers and multifunctional ink tanks and ink cartridges also in retail, serving different consumer profiles, from home users to micro entrepreneurs and small businesses. And even with the rise in the dollar, the good average price of the last quarter of 2017 was maintained in the first months of 2018”, adds Pereira.

Expectations

IDC Brasil expects the printer market to close the year 2018 with growth between 9.5% to 12%. “Despite being lower than last year, which grew 21%, it will continue to register high. What should continue to drive sales are the exchanges of parks in the corporate sector and the fact that small business owners and the end consumer are upgrading previously purchased models. In addition, new consumers should contribute to this increase”, concludes the analyst.
