After five years of negative results, the Brazilian PC market returned to growth in the first quarter of 2017. Between January and March, 1.1 million machines were sold, i.e. 5% more than in the same period of 2016. In total, 405 thousand units were desktops and 701 thousand notebooks. Consumer products account for 65% of the total market. The corporate segment was responsible for the purchase of 35% of computers, which represents 340,000 devices. The data are part of the IDC Brazil PCs Tracker Q1 study, carried out by IDC Brasil, a leader in market intelligence, consulting services and conferences with the Information Technology and Telecommunications industries.

“The growth is modest, but it demonstrates that the Brazilian market is stabilizing. The improvement happened due to the end of the dollar oscillation, promotions carried out by retailers to encourage purchases and increased confidence in the corporate sector to invest”, says Pedro Hagge, research analyst at IDC Brasil.

Still according to the IDC study, the average ticket in the period was R$ 2,141, 22% less than in the months of January, February and March 2016, when the market worked with the dollar higher and had an average price of R$ 2,750. “The Brazilian consumer is very sensitive to price and the drop of more than R$ 600 in computers was a decisive point for the market to grow again”, completes Hagge.

For 2017, IDC Brasil forecasts maintenance in the PC market with 4.5 million units sold, of which 1.6 million are desktops and 2.9 million are notebooks, a slight growth of 1.2% compared to 2016 , and revenue of R$ 9.6 billion. “In a mature market such as PCs, growth, even if small, is very important, even more so because there is strong competition with tablets and, mainly, with cell phones” concludes the IDC Brasil analyst.
