The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Marco Antônio Raupp, informed in a hearing at the Science and Technology Commission (CCT) of the Federal Senate that in two years R$ 2.1 billion will be allocated to the ICT sector, one of the priority areas for the ministry. "The MCTI used to be focused specifically on managing universities and research centers, and now it is increasingly becoming a partner of companies, encouraging innovation in the private sector", he said.

In 2012, according to the minister, R$ 57 million were allocated to TI Maior Program actions. "This was a program that we planned for a long time. Since we launched it, last year, we have received very good feedback from companies, which have adhered and generated the development of software and communication services that are increasingly innovative and of higher quality. The area is one of the strategic ones for the country," he said.

According to the minister, the amounts passed on to companies through tax breaks under the Information Technology Law total R$ 3.8 billion, which benefited 425 companies, generating R$ 920 million in innovation. The Lei do Bem granted the benefit to 795 organizations, resulting in R$ 6.7 billion in technological development.

The lack of qualified professionals is identified as one of the main problems for the development of the ICT sector. In this sense, MCTI is developing “Forma Engenharia”, a stimulus program for universities in the area and to attract high school students to the sector. Around 700 projects and 2.5 million students participate in the program.
